Tottenham might look to Sergio Reguilón for their upcoming clash against Bournemouth on Thursday evening, as manager Ange Postecoglou weighs his options amidst ongoing injury concerns within the squad.
The Spanish left-back has endured a challenging season, entering the final year of his contract with Spurs but remaining largely on the fringes. He has been named in the matchday squad only twice and has yet to make a single appearance this term.
Initially left out of Postecoglou’s plans and reportedly considering terminating his contract ahead of the January transfer window, Reguilon’s situation might change as the club confronts pressing challenges.
Ange Postecoglou says Sergio Reguilon is ready to play
Postecoglou has suggested that Reguilón could still play a role if required. Speaking ahead of the Bournemouth match, the Australian coach highlighted the defender’s professionalism and commitment, emphasising that he has been training regularly and remains an active member of the squad despite his lack of game time.
Postecoglou also acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Reguilón’s future, noting that his expiring contract could influence decisions as the January transfer window approaches.
Interest from several La Liga clubs, including Sevilla—where Reguilón enjoyed a productive loan spell—and Getafe, has further fuelled speculation about a potential move.
Postecoglou said (as quoted by TBR):
“He’s [Reguilon] ready [if needed]. He’s training every day and he’s part of the squad.
“There’s also a reason why Reggy is in the last year of his contract with us. We’ll see how that all transpires.
“There’s nothing wrong with his attitude and he’s been training all the time with us.”
If Reguilón does feature against Bournemouth, it would be his first competitive appearance for Spurs since April 2022, in a 1-0 loss to Brighton during Antonio Conte’s tenure.
Since that match, the 27-year-old has embarked on loan spells with Atlético Madrid, Manchester United, and Brentford, but has struggled to secure consistent playing time upon his return to North London.
During his time with Tottenham, Reguilón has accumulated 67 appearances, contributing two goals and eight assists. Known for his energetic runs and attacking intent from the left flank, the Spaniard has shown glimpses of his quality in the past but has yet to find a place in Postecoglou’s system.
While it’s unclear whether Reguilón will see significant minutes against Bournemouth, his potential involvement could signal a chance to re-establish himself or serve as a stepping stone for a new chapter in his career as January looms.
