Tottenham are bracing for the January departure of left-back Sergio Reguilon, with the Spanish defender inching closer to an exit after the ongoing season spent entirely on the sidelines.
Reguilón has not featured under Ange Postecoglou this campaign, falling out of favour and excluded from the club’s future plans. With his contract set to expire in the summer, a mid-season move appears increasingly likely as Spurs look to streamline their squad.
It was previously reported that a transfer away to Sevilla in the January window is ‘heating up’ and as per the latest report from Vamos Mi Sevilla FC, Sevilla are frontrunners to sign the 27-year-old. The Andalusian side is eager to bring Reguilon back following his successful loan spell during the 2019/20 season, which played a key role in their Europa League triumph.
While Sevilla hopes to sign him on a free transfer next summer, they face stiff competition from other suitors. Getafe have emerged as a strong contender for a January deal, potentially offering Reguilón the chance to revive his career sooner rather than later.
The report adds that Spurs would prefer a January bidding war for him as they would prefer to coup something from his sale rather than seeing him leave for free in the summer.
Sergio Reguilon: Struggles at Tottenham
Reguilon’s journey at Tottenham began in September 2020 when he joined on a five-year contract for a reported £27.5 million. He made an impressive start, providing an assist in his debut during a League Cup clash against Chelsea.
Despite early promise, Reguilón’s time at Spurs has been inconsistent, which has resulted in multiple loan spells. He spent stints with Atlético Madrid, Manchester United, and Brentford, over the last few seasons.
Although he showed glimpses of quality, he struggled to establish himself as a dependable option in Tottenham’s long-term plans. Across his time with the Lilywhites, he made 67 appearances, contributing two goals and eight assists.
A January transfer would provide Reguilon with a much-needed reset while allowing Spurs to focus on players better suited to Postecoglou’s vision. As his chapter in North London comes to an end, Reguilón has the opportunity to rediscover his form and thrive in a new environment.
