Ryan Mason’s Tottenham legacy is under attack from some fans, and with the atmosphere in the fan base becoming increasingly confused and in some instances positively hostile, past decisions are being scrutinized.
Mason was pitched as a unifying character, presented on the coattails of Daniel Levy’s speech about ‘Tottenham DNA’, designed to bring the fans together in the post ‘nasty Portuguese man’ environment.
Questions about Ledley King’s value as a defensive coach had already been asked before Mourinho’s exit, and whilst Mason said all the right things, it was difficult to discern any positive changes to the squad under his watchful eye.
Joe Rodon has impressed during the Euros and despite getting a few appearances under José, Mason appeared absolutely unconvinced by the Welshman.
I take a view that minus the perceived backlash against Mourinho, Ryan Mason will fail to pass muster when the spotlight is only shining on him in splendid isolation.
Appointing a defensive coach because he was a club faithful, a very good player and a nice fellow reeks of charity rather than football sense.
Appointing a once player as manager because he had aspirations there but with absolutely no experience was also an accident waiting to happen. luckily Bale actually tried when mason arrived on scene and made his stats better. Given a decade in L1/Championship Mason might come good as a manager but not right now.
Keeping both around when clearly the new incoming whoever, is insane unless he demands it.
So what was Jose doing to justify his salary if he wasn’t involved in the training and coaching?
Also can you explain the differences in performance post Jose with those prior to his dismissal? I’m not making a case for Mason to get the job but I didn’t see any decline in performances in his short reign. Indeed he had a higher points per game ratio than Jose.
Aye he definitely should have played more. He was out for 87 days with an ankle injury at some point, perhaps it was this holding him back.
All hail Joe Roden, with ten men against Italy thats how you defend.. If Maureen would have played him more instead of Dier and Sanchez then it would have been a different season.
So you think that the defensive coach has no responsibility for how the players HE coaches perform ?
You are aware that few managers actually involve themselves in the training side of things. They have a team of assistants who do that. Ledley King, who was an ambassador for the club was given the job of defensive coach when Poch left. Ryan Mason was appointed u23 coach after his career came to an abrupt end. Neither of them have the experience or the ability to coach at the level they were asked to do. as was witnessed by the performances we saw after Mourinho left.
I think it was incredibly brave. For someone with relatively little experience to be thrust into the media spotlight must have been daunting. I’ve no idea what the future holds for him but if it had all gone seriously wrong, his win rate actually was better than Jose’s, he would have been humiliated and probably never got the chance to coach again at any club.
I am sure Levy saw him as footballing collateral which pretty much sums up our chairman
How do can you say that when Jose is in charge and the players are not good enough as stated in most of all these posters previous comments. The defense was put under tremendous pressure with the tactical setup and they were woeful individually for starters. If the defenders were a tad bit on average Jose would still be our manager. Are you guys just throwing crap each time there is a post or there are some coherent thought and reality.
You might reassess the choice of the word, “brave.” The choice as a 29 year old coach to get exposure as an interim coach of a PL club was an absolute no-brainer.
Mason is under pressure to play his own peers. There are players among them who need to be SHIPPED. OUT. Certainly not coddled and played just because they all sit at the same lunch table.
Some of these players need shipping out for their own good. They need a dose of the real world, in a real club. For too many years, all they have known is a merchandising firm where only the manager is blamed. They hold control over their own managers, with no culpability of their own for failure on the pitch.. Inmates, asylum.
Mason will not work in this environment — but he is ideally what Levy would want.— Levy can control Mason like a marionette.
yes it was 12 but 4 as sub so 8 games in starting line up
I’m not saying Rodon didn’t deserve football under Mason, I was just making the point that after couple of initial appearances under Jose, he didn’t get much game time after that over the season.
The team is a reflection of Levy and ENIC. No desire or passion for winning on the pitch. It all trickles down from the top in all organisations. We are what we are because Levy and ENIC are what they are. Mason is a Pooch type spinner for the ENIC narrative. Levy loved Pooch because he could dwell in the shadows behind him and Pooch initially was more than happy to spout the jam tomorrow message. Pooch started to frail at the edges when people started asking when was he going to win anything. When that spotlight fell firmly on him he switched off. Levy I am sure has no liking for his current high profile in the media. As he said he likes to do things in private. That allows the true agenda of ENIC to be kept in the shadows. He would dearly love Pooch back to launch yet another 5 year project of jam tomorrow and so would Pooch like to come back and adopt a similar jam tomorrow appointment. Pooch knows that at PSG it will be jam today or there is no tomorrow.
No. As long as you’re okay me giving mine? 😉
I reckon HH and the posters on this blog should march down to the supporters trust and take seats on their board.
And if he’s not up to it….why the $#%# are they buying him??
Rodon should have been learning alongside Toby all last season.
Must agree it’s strange, I do wonder after all the years at the club why when Jose come in would you then decide he’s now a coach
levy keeping a man in the camp ???
Ledley with his one knee was one hell of player when he was fit.
Ledley with his one knee as a defensive coach is an absolute car crash.
It’s clear that coaching and getting the message across is something Ledley cannot do. This is what happens when clubs think ex players can become great managers and coaches. There’s a gulf of difference between playing the game and managing and coaching it.
Only a small number succeed.
TBF he was a new acquisition under Mourinho whereas as when Mason took over he’d been with us a while and everybody knew what a good prospect he was. Don’t forget he’s an international for Wales as well, more than can be said of Dire these days.
I remember watching Jay DeMerritt at the 2010 World Cup for the USA and thinking he looked like Paul McGrath. He was a Watford reserve. I do hope Joe evolves in Ruben Dias but doing it against Swiss / Turkish forward lines is not the same as the quality you face week in and week out in the PL.
+1
Er… so you object to people passing their opinions?
Toby and Joe Rodon seemed to be a perfect central two in a back four. Old head and young legs – yet we had the most weird combinations of defenders that never fitted and also conceded weird goals.
It was Rodons first season, it takes time for players to bed in especially if miss pre season and some. With the way games come/came there is stuff you don’t work on in the same way as a pre season.
Poch never had a player fly out of the blocks and needed a preseason to get a tune out of them
The patience game with Rodon was right. He’s a player I think is worth the long term view.
The issue with Mason was he was going full Poch lite in management which explains what he could get across to the players and who he played. If Davis was fit he would have been ahead of Reguilon every game, because he had worked with Poch.
The same point is that a manger needs to be in place by the end of next week otherwise your playing catch up.
Is Joe Rodon “Champions League” quality…? Maybe not yet, But is he our most “reliable” defender – I would say so, he is a no nonsense row Z throwback to when defenders were defenders and I personally think he should be playing every week.
He is *definitely* better than Sanchez and Dier.
Hopefully Wales make it past the Danes, and Joe takes a few plaudits to help his become a bit more respected.
maybe your right i thought it was less than that
Ryan Mason had the team for 6 prem games and did not play Rodon
Jose had him all season and he made 8 appearances in total
Prem, League cup, FA cup, Europa league (not even selected in squad) approx 50 games ??
I wonder why Jose never picked him
Jose used Rodon fairly sparingly I think you will find, 12 league appearances in 7 months.
Mason was chosen to be a short-term ‘fill-in’ and he was brave to accept. He did okay, nothing special, picked his mates to play, but it was for a few games and I’m not going to get hung up over his short tenure or direct any ill feeling his way.
He did well as a ‘squad midfielder’ for Spurs during his time, stepped up (this time as a player, not a manger) when big names and bigger wages weren’t putting in the effort… and because of that I still have a good opinion of him.
If it transpires that Levy offers him a yearly rolling contract, and he takes it up, and does poorly… then he deserves some bile… but c’mon… we can all accept his ‘very short stint’ as manager for Tottenham as something we can put behind us.
I reckon he was asked to showcase Dier just to see how rubbish he was.
