“What’s the reason behind it?” Mills insists not every player would be happy with Conte’s demands

By Bruce Grove -

Danny Mills predicts some Spurs players will be unhappy at Antonio Conte’s decision to ban certain food items from their meals to improve their performances.

The Athletic reports the former Chelsea boss has demanded that ketchup and mayonnaise be excluded from players’ meals after finding some of them overweight.

This decision hasn’t been accepted by everyone in the football world and some have even made fun of it.

Mills also doesn’t necessarily think it makes sense and wonders if it would improve performances at the club.

“It can annoy players at times,” Mills told Football Insider.

“What’s the reason behind it? If I want ketchup do I play any differently?

“Sometimes it’s just a fact of saying ‘I’m in charge, you’re now under my authority. You have to do what I say’.

“I’m not sure that’s always the best way to do things but that’s the way he’s gone down.

“He’s just asserting his authority, that’s what it comes down to.

“We know he’s a good manager, we know his fitness regime is intense. Is ketchup and mayonnaise going to make a difference? No, is the answer. Either way.

“If players want it, they will eat what they have to at the training ground and go home and eat what they want.

“You can’t stop them stopping at a service station or a shop on the way home to get a bag of sweets or some ketchup.

“It’s trying to lay down the law and say ‘This is what they are doing’.”

The Boy Hotspur Says

Mill has no idea what it means to be a Premier League manager and doesn’t have the know-how to question Conte’s judgement.

The Italian has won league titles in England and Italy and should know what it takes to compete at the highest level of English football.

Spurs have achieved little with players eating ketchup and mayonnaise all along. It is only sensible that a change is made to their meals. Perhaps things would get better for them.

But this is nothing new. I remember when Juamde Ramos came in, he did the exact same thing banning ketchup and mayo. That was 13 years ago. A lot of managers will do things like that banning things that seem insignificant, but that’s why they win things.

Thats why Mills is a useless pundit, clearly doesn’t have the mental capacity to understand winning and what goes on.

Plus wenger was doing things like that in the late 80s and early 90s in France. Then changed the whole landscape of English football when he came over. Now everyone follows similar practices now.

When Hoddle was getting players doing yoga in the 90s, everyone laughed at him, now its pretty much common practice now. Remember Hoddle was managed by wenger at Monaco, that’s why he was ahead of his time as a manager.

I think it’s fine if he says they aren’t eating that at the training ground. It’s the culture put in place, it’s symbolic. Of course they can go home and slob out. He’s saying “some of you are overweight and I’mgetting on top of it to make you more competitive. Good luck to him.

Actually I would say it’s very little to do with actual ketchup dietary values but more about mindset and discipline.
If players can’t cope with no red sauce or follow a very simple request, what are they going to be like on the pitch.

Ah diddums no ketchup on their chips, I bet of few our plyers will throw their toys out of their pram. Good job, overweight wage thieves.

Agreed, it’s Danny Mills, FFS. 🙄
Most reports only focus on ketchup & mayonnaise but there’s a long list of foods & beverages that have been banned.
ALL sports people (& most reasonably informed non-sports people) know just how important nutrition is & Mr. Mills’s nonsensical opinion makes him the Clemmie Moodie of football ‘pundits.’
(term used loosely as he sure is no expert!)

Todays Spurs video showed a recommended menu for the day on a wall chart so big that not even Sissoko couldn’t miss. Options seemed to change depending whether match day, recovery day or training day. Are they real professional footballers or just Sunday park amateurs on enormous expenses.

Exactly right H.. Anyone studying sports science or similar knows that diet and nutrition plays a key part in performance.. You are what you eat.. If players are getting pie and chips and ketchup on their way home, plus a bag of sweets, this would be extremely unprofessional… Of course it is Conte asserting his authority, but on a subject that matters.
