What will Matt Doherty bring to Tottenham? Alex Mcleish knows

By Bruce Grove -

Former Aston Villa boss, Alex McLeish has hailed Tottenham’s capture of Matt Doherty.

Spurs landed the Republic of Ireland International this summer after he spent ten years at Wolves.

Over the past two seasons, he has emerged as one of the best right full-backs in the Premier League.

He was a member of the Wolves team that has taken the Premier League by storm after their promotion back to the top flight two seasons ago.

He had been a tough opponent to play against for Spurs and the Lilywhites decided to open the cheque book and sign him this summer.

Speaking to Football Insider, McLeish stated that the full-back is a tremendous athlete and claimed that Spurs have signed a “gem”.

He has started Spurs’ two games of the season so far and he will hope to win the big trophies that have eluded himself and Tottenham over the last few years.

Jose, I know over the years, if you look at his teams, he does like big defenders and Doherty is a big giant of a guy and he’s also a tremendous athlete,” McLeish said.

“He has shown the Wolves fans and the English Premier League that this is a guy who has been a tremendous servant to Wolves.

“To see him go on to Tottenham Hotspur, whether he sees that as a bigger move – again, in the grand scheme of things Tottenham would be deemed bigger than Wolves, although Wolves have come on under the regime and the people who own the club and also the manager.

“Doherty can defend and attack in both penalty boxes. Jose’s got a gem there.”

It is still early days yet and clearly Doherty is getting used to a new regime, however, it has to be hoped that we get to see the Doherty that was so effective for Wolves sooner rather than later.

Lets hope we see the real Matt Doherty over the next matches rather than a pale imitation of the old one! A cautionary note is he much maligned Ben Davies who joined Spurs from Swansea on the strength of his defensive and offensive duties which is in short supply! Ditto Ryan Sessegnon whose form has badly slumped.
