Tottenham Hotspur let a 2-1 lead slip away against Southampton as The Saints scored two goals in less than five minutes. Mohamed Elyounoussi and Che Adams stole three points from Spurs, who needed them.
The 3-2 loss puts a damper on the north London club’s fight for a top-four spot. Son Heung-min spoke to BT Sport (via Evening Standard) after the match, where the 29-year-old stated that the squad needs to do much better.
Son spoke about conceding the two goals and putting forth a poor performance at home where they should be coming away with all three points.
“To be honest, very disappointed and gutted,” Son said. “Especially being at home and leading. We should do much better than this, conceding the same goals in five minutes. Very disappointing. When you play at home, we knew Southampton would be pushing hard and being aggressive.”
“We struggled in the first half but had chances to score. Obviously really disappointed at halftime; we pressed high in the second half but could have finished the game early—a disappointing result. Everyone is dropping points, and it is a disappointing result. We are not looking at any other teams and want to finish as high as possible. We need go again, bounce back, and it is going to be a tough night.”
Despite the loss and sitting four points behind West Ham United for fourth place, Tottenham does have three games in hand over The Hammers, so they could make up ground. However, Spurs will need to avoid these types of performances, or they could be falling by the wayside in the race for a top-four spot.
Exactly. Sanchez has poor concentration and gets nervy under pressure. He hates being pressed and I hope he doesn’t play against City in a couple of weeks time, otherwise it could get ugly. Royal shouldn’t play for us ever again. Southampton got so much joy down our right side. Bentacur was the only positive thing from last night’s game.
Its about consistency isnt it. Sanchez fr example, every time he has a half decent game, he follows it up with a performance where he looks an absolute liability. The lad cant seem to handle consistent pressure and a high press.
Royal is a waste of space (and money) seems like he cant attack and cant defend either. Would rather see someone from the U23’s play than endure his garbage anymore.
Would think that Romero, Dier and Davies will get a run of games at the back, along with Bentancur and Skipp in the middle. But the fact I’m hoping for Doherty over Royal is somewhat depressing.
Improving a football team is about replacing your worst players first, not collecting galacticos, a right wingback and a reliable centre half is where the next £100m should go.
