UEFA statement is bad news for a lot of Tottenham players including Kane

By Bruce Grove -

The consequences of Tottenham being a part of the European Super League are starting to become apparent with UEFA President Alexander Ceferin, confirming that any player that partakes in the ESL will not be allowed to represent their countries at international level, including the Euro’s and World Cup.

Well, you have to think that the players union Fifpro will not take this lying down regardless of what team they play for, however, if UEFA stick to their guns then almost every Tottenham player will have a huge decision to make over their future.

Will Harry Kane give up his England career, will he give up on beating Wayne Rooney’s goal record?

And of course, it is not just Kane, there are internationals running right through the team and not just at Tottenham. All 12 teams involved in this are full to the brim with internationals and a lot of them take that very seriously.

This is now already getting very messy and we await the Premier League next step, their rules make it very clear and if they follow through on them, then expect explosions to follow very soon.

There is no way that is the case. Players are contracted to train and the club retain their playing registration. Players have no control over which competitions their club enters.

I’m not in favour of this ESL but what would the Prem be without the leading clubs? Answer: just another castrated tournament like the Ropey.

Judges, not understanding the nature of TRUE SPORT, would likely back the rebels, alas; they would regard the opposition – and possible bans and exclusions – as restraint of trade!.

The way football is going, I can see the time, possibly, when national associations could be charged millions by clubs in order for their players to be released for internationals, then international – as well as club – football would also be just about the FIVE countries, with less wealthy footballing countries ie Holland and Portugal unable to get their best players out.

Agreed! Though, at present, I still value the FA Cup – though an extremely poor third choice trophy win – as a consolation. Even more than the European competition for also rans (sorry, the Ropey) just how pointless would the new proposed Conference be?

Yes, can you imagine trying to negotiate the new TV deal and admitting you no longer have Man utd and Liverpool etc on board (for so many armchair fans these are the only clubs they are interested in)

Getting like Kerry Packer’s cricket circus – weren’t those players banned from test cricket?

The European Commission would be legally bound to stop this as it contravenes European Competition rules. Whether that would actually happen is another matter.

Except this is a monopoly in action as no other clubs will be able to get promoted to this league.

CL is a quality competition that allows clubs of all shapes and sizes to compete, even if we know one of the top ones will win it.

No matter which say you look at this, it will destroy football as we know it now if it goes ahead.

Something like this will most likely go ahead because football is rapidly going broke thanks to covid. Perhaps this is the way out for the big clubs? Okay so it doesn’t help the fans who live just around the corner from the stadium, but I wonder just what percentage they make up these days anyway? I bet the vast majority of fans go to none, or hardly any of their team’s matches anyway. Football has gone global, a SL would cater for that.
As for the PL getting all bristly and saying the big 6 would be banned from it, they’d be biting off their noses to spite their faces. The Premier League would be devalued massively if they did that, and would be a shadow of it’s former self. All the remaining clubs would also miss all those glory fixtures more than the top 6 ever would. I suggest they think about that first.

So Kane will join Everton or Leicester if he wants Shearer’s / Rooney’s records which even if he achieves will be seriously devalued because he was not playing against the very best. Can’t see it myself.

The Prem, UEFA and FIFA have a second rate product without the top players, they and the outraged fans know it.

The way I see it is The CL is not a tournament of League Champions, unlike its predecessor, the European Cup. UEFA have expanded it for profit, and now they are crying because some clubs want to do something different…for more profit!

If it stops the ropey then I’m all for it, if ever there was a pointless competition then that is it. Nobody cares who wins most comps these days anyway, except for the PL and CL of course, the others have all been voided by the CL, now that’s at risk and they don’t like it!

If you go onto the Guardian online, free to view, check out Jonathan Liew’s article, Only someone who hates football could lead a Super League. It gives some good insights into what’s driving this. You’ll find it in the Sports section /football.

Do you think?

I’m not sure the appeal is there. European football is consistently the most watched. I don’t think MLS fans, African fans or South American fans have an interest to watch their sides play Barcelona. I don’t think they genuinely believe it would be competitive. It’s fine for a pre-season tour but not workable as a serious competition.

I think the ESL would be globally popular, and these founder clubs are able to negotiate the TV rights which largely is all they care about. Especially without the need to fly their squads all over the world to play Kaizer Chiefs or LA Galaxy. Europe is the hotbed of footballing talent, I can’t see a global powerplay coming anytime soon.

I’m not a lawyer but I’d think the players contracts would be voided and they could walk away with no transfer fees involved.

When the penny finally drops FIFA who are trying to sit on the fence will ban the players from International Football.

This Euro Super League is a threat not just to domestic Leagues and The Champions League it’s a threat to International Football. They’ll do to the World Cup what the Premier League has done to the FA and League Cups, destroy them.

They’re not stopping at a European Super League, the next move is a World Super League with the best South American teams, Major League Soccer teams, the best teams from Africa and Asia.

The competition will be almost year round to milk as much money from streaming and all these new platforms. This is a power grab on a never before seen level to dominate world football.
When Fifa realise what’s going on watch the sh*t hit the fan.

If this is upheld (ESL and UEFA banning players) do the players legally have a choice? Can they break their club contracts?

Dan

I think this will be a case of who blinks first. There will be a lot of Lawyers rubbing their hands whichever way this goes.

I think the PL and UEFA have made a rod for their own back, they gave so much power to the “big six”, a national tournament without the best players in world football would not be as appealing. I cannot see UEFA following through with this. It would only take one major tournament sponsor to pull out due to the best Spanish/Italian/English/Belgian/Dutch/German players not being eligible to play.

That same sponsor would likely take their money to the ESL. UEFA can label it up as greed as much as they want but they aren’t exactly saints themselves.

N.B Before everyone starts, i’m not exactly for this ESL idea, i’m just looking at the developments objectively.

it is tough decision for the players do they want to represent their countries in Euro and World cups or do they want to be rich, celebrities and exclusive elite clubs.
