Transfer Developments: £20m Midfielder Linked, Eriksen Price Difference, Latest Vertonghen Quotes

By Joe Fish -

We are nearly halfway through January and got our first signing in this morning, with Gedson Fernandes joining on loan from Benfica.

Who could follow Fernandes in? And who might be leaving before the deadline? Here is some of the latest transfer news surrounding Spurs…

Attractive Midfield Option Could Be Available For £20m

The Daily Mail understands that we retain an interest in Nice midfielder Wylen Cyprian who is valued at £20m. The 24-year-old has scored seven goals and provided five assists this season under manager Patrick Vieira.

I can’t see this happening after the arrival of Gedson. If we are to sign another midfielder this month it will surely be a genuine holding player.

Negotiations Over Eriksen Price Ongoing With Inter

Daniel Levy wants £17m to sell Christian Eriksen this month and at the moment Inter are only offering £8.5m, according to Sky Sports Italy.

While I want to move on from the Eriksen saga as quickly as possible, I actually side with Levy on this one. £17m would still represent a bargain for the Italians even if Eriksen would be available for free in a few months.

Vertonghen Not Giving Anything Away On Contract

“I feel like everything I say will affect it in one way or the other, so I prefer not to answer, the Belgian told Sky Sports. “I’m a happy man. I love the guys. Life is good in London and at this great club. That’s all I want to say.”

I suspect Jose Mourinho got his way with Toby Alderweireld’s new deal, but Levy isn’t going to do business with a second defender who is past 30.

Vertonghen probably wants to stay so doesn’t want to burn any bridges yet.

Is it worth the grief of keeping an unhappy Eriksen to quibble over a price. The whole saga has upset the players for so long.

Bruno should have been last year along with Paulo Pabala and Eriksen, Jan and Aurier sold and Trippier replaced.

I would love verts to stay. One of the very few leaders we have. Centre backs rarely rely on their pace. If sheringham managed to play top level until he was in his 40s, surely others can be capable of getting close with good genes and looking after themselves.. I thought jans performances had been good (when not played out of position) toby, jan and the marauding davinson are great options… Eriksen will be remembered as a joke now. We haven’t won the fa cup in 29 years (which we used to hold the record for before sir alex and wenger) well the great pain couldn’t even win a mickey mouse cup with us.

Levy wanted 150 million soon after coutinho went for around that price… The top clubs aren’t stupid they only want winners. Once those contracts run down thats it. He will have a pre contract all signed and ready to go for next season. Levy wont get 💩 for him now and its served him right. He should be long gone.. We couldnt trust eriksen when he wanted to be here, now he doesn’t want to be here we are still trusting this snowflake.. Hes far worse than a bad smell in that dressing room. On the pitch his head always goes down one of the first. Negativity breeds more negativity. Other heads start to look at the floor with him. Half the teams heads all looking down at the floor.. We need leaders brought in, warriors, winners who are proud to wear the badge.. Not little drips who think they’re bigger than what they are.

That’s more to do with his contract though ,if he still had 3 years left he would go for 40 mil at least I reckon.

Very dominant right foot, that worries me.

Here’s hoping, should be technically good, as he’s Portuguese, whether he can adapt to the rigours of the Premier League is to be seen. It’s a rental so if he doesn’t play in enough games we don’t have to buy him outright. Why we didn’t buy Bruno Fernandes is the question, when we see him in action in the Premier League dominating midfield and scoring for fun we’re going to look like mugs.

I just found out about the Gedson deal. I am a HUGE fan of this kid! It is quite rare for me to like any of Levy’s work, but he hit a home run here. I have been worried about how hard it would be to fill the hole of Eriksen’s departure. This is one of the few players in the world that might be able to.

He is not close to the defender that Eriksen is yet, but is very similar in his playmaking abilities. He will find space in midfield, get on the ball, dribble in traffic and distribute it to the forwards – and he is really good at it! Think of a younger David Silva. He would have been perfect in Poch’s system, I am just curious if he will work in Jose’s? Not sure he can as effectively do the nonstop box to box sprints that Jose has been forcing Eriksen and Dele to do.

I suppose the only good news about being halfway through the window with virtually no deals,is that nobody has really done any business yet.We are not the only club who needs to get quality in.I have my doubts that Fernandes will offer us anything before the end of the season, but this is typical Levy in Poundland.Minimum outlay for maximum hoped for return.
