Tottenham tried to include player in Matt Doherty deal but he rejected the move

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham tried to include Serge Aurier in their move for former Wolves full-back Matt Doherty, but the Ivorian rejected a move to the Midlands, it has been claimed.

Spurs have just landed Doherty on a four-year deal and the Republic of Ireland international is expected to become the club’s first choice under Jose Mourinho.

Serge Aurier was Spurs’ only recognisable right-back last season.

Having struggled to play under Mauricio Pochettino, he was afforded more chances to play under Jose Mourinho at the end of last season.

However, he isn’t a player that can be trusted to keep his concentration for the duration of a game and that is one reason why the Lilywhites have signed Doherty.

Star Sports claims that the Lilywhites attempted to use Aurier as a sweetener in the deal that will bring Doherty to Spurs, but the former PSG ace turned it down.

While the Ivorian wants to leave Spurs, he expects to be signed by a top side.

AC Milan has remained interested in signing him, but they are struggling to agree on a fee for his signature (The Sun).

The same report also states that Bayer Leverkusen is another team that wants to sign him, but Spurs are determined that they must receive the right offer before they let him leave.

That would have been the greatest bit of business……ever! And from Wolves perspective, the worst.

I believe we paid c23M for Aurier. If Levy sold him for 15M he would get back 60% of what he paid, but will be getting a player who is twice as good if not better.

Sounds about right to me, thought the same. Unless Levy wanted Doherty + cash for Aurier.

I don’t believe this to be true as am I correct in saying that we are asking more for Aurier than what we paid for Doherty ? Doesn’t make sense if we paid less than 15mil for him when we are holding out for close to 20mil for Aurier? Can someone shed light on this or have I got it totally wrong ?
