One of Tottenham’s biggest transfer flops in recent times is Gedson Fernandes and the Portuguese midfielder might see an end to his London nightmare next month.
He was the club’s first signing under Jose Mourinho and he joined the club on an 18-month loan deal from Benfica last January.
He was expected to become a key member of a struggling Tottenham team this year.
He didn’t break into the team before the end of last season and this season has similarly been tough for him.
Tottenham is doing well in the league and he isn’t one of the players that the club needs to rely on.
Portuguese publication, A Bola says that Tottenham and Benfica have both agreed for his loan deal to be terminated early.
Tottenham expected so much from him that they agreed to pay £46 million to make the loan deal permanent at the end of its tenure.
He is now set to return to Portugal, but at 21, he can back himself to get his career back on track, probably at a smaller club.
Spurs will feel smart that they didn’t sign him outright, else they would have been stuck with a big-money flop.
Has Hitchen’s fingerprints all over it.
José building relationships with the Portuguese big clubs. How’s that strange?
No space for him in the European squad. I like the way he learned to play right back within couple months. England was a bit too soon for him.
I don’t think he got what it was supposed to be about, showed absolutely nothing from what I saw of him.
We could have done with a striker when this lad was signed not another midfielder. Total waste of everybody’s time, including his. At least he’s been able to spend time with some of his folks, who live in London apparently. All very strange….
Not exactly a transfer flop, as he was a young Portuguese boy brought in on loan, with no obligation to buy. However your assertion that “he was expected to become a key member of a struggling Tottenham team this year” is surely well wide of the mark. I would suggest that there was no evidence whatsoever that he was going to become a key member of this Spurs team, in fact all the evidence suggested that he was going to be surplus to requirements this year, which is exactly what has happened. The upshot is another pointless pound shop ‘deal’, a la N’Koudou, N’Jie, Stambouli, etc, who at least we had the foresight not to acquire on a permanent basis.
