Tottenham player ratings against West Ham – Spurs best player gets only a 6

By Bruce Grove -

Another abject display from Tottenham this afternoon and the 2-1 loss to the Hammers was probably the right result despite Spurs coming close in the last 20 mins or so.

The whole team performance from almost the first minute was lacklustre and it is hard to pick out one Tottenham player for special praise but there are a whole heap that deserve severe criticism.

Tottenham player ratings

Huge Lloris – 5

Culpable for the first goal, though he was not the only one and truth be told he no longer looks confident between the sticks.

Japhet Tanganga – 5

Did ok for the most part but offers nothing coming forward, clearly a work in progress.

Eric Dier – 4

He really is not a centre back and why Mourinho persists with him I do not know.

Davinson Sanchez – 4

Another poor display from the Colombian, surely he must be gone in the summer.

Sergio Reguilon – 5

Not at his sharpest today but that has a lot to do with his recent injury, hopefully, he will be better next time out.

Tanguy Ndombele – 5

Did his normal trickery on the ball and made the odd decent pass but never really offered up much of a threat.

Pierre Emile Hojbjerg – 6

Was his usual busy self flying in at every opportunity and is still prone to rashness but did his job satisfactorily.

Lucas Moura – 6

Probably close to being our best player today and that alone tells you how poor the whole team was.

Erik Lamela – 4

Back to his poor self, no longer fit for purpose and only a matter of time before he gets a red card for some of his tackling. Now a liability.

Son-Heung-min – 4

Another below-average performance from the South Korean. What has happened to him in recent weeks? A shadow of his early-season displays.

Harry Kane – 4

Very wasteful in front of goal today, could his confidence be hit? That would be a huge worry if that is the case.

Subs

Gareth Bale – 6

Made a difference when he came on and questions will be asked why he did not start.

Matt Doherty – 5

Did better than most of our other defenders today in the 45 minutes he had on the pitch.

Dele Alli – 5

Frustrating once again with his silly little flicks at crucial moments that never ever come off. But in all fairness, he did look a lot sharper upfront than a lot of the starters today.

Manager

Jose Mourinho – 3

This defeat is on him, he chose the defence, he selected Lamela and left Bale on the bench, he set the team up, yes, this is on him.

I thought the new signings might have made a difference but most were not close to standard the usual Levy way…
I got mugged at the start and then i saw them play..

I think urgency evaporates when playing with nitwits like Sanchez, Dier etc

Kane was definitely not putting 100% into challenges today, but I don’t blame him. He shouldn’t have to do too much of that.
Getting rid of Mourinho doesn’t change the fact that many of the players in the squad are not PL level, especially in defence. What Mourinho needs to do is get the team to play with urgency from minute one; for the last 30 minutes we battered West Ham, and made them look pretty average. The trouble is we had gifted them 2 goals so they didn’t need to do much to win.

It’s an eye opener. His childhood seemed to be entirely focussed on individual ball skills, not teamwork. Hmmmm!

Kane 4, Dele 5???? You have got to be joking! I gave Kane 6, Dele a 2 at best. Kane could have had 2, possibly 3 goals.
Lamela was also buzzing and making things happen.

Doherty lost the ball lazily twice in the build up to their second goal. Was he still warming up? You can’t possibly think he was better than Kane.

Our beloved manager has come out and told the world hes still one of the best managers in the world. Basically distancing himself from the fact we are now 9pts behind them lot, whos manager was laughed at and had a month less time in charge than him. Who was going to bring in winning football. I believe thats 12pts from a potential 36. Now you people who think hes the answer, good luck to you your gonna need it. I’ll ask the question again, someone tell me one thing thats improved in his near year and a half in charge, and I won’t even bring up the fact he didn’t get to pick his own players to bring in as long as the fans that use that excuse acknowledge no other manager in the last 20 years has either

Question for the wise. On the 25th of April we play city in the final of the carabo Cup. If we are still in europa Cup and face a tough double header either side of this game which is more important.

He deserved that assist but Kane is going through a ‘disbelieving look to the heavens’ patch in front of goal

Lamela was the only one trying in the first hal.I suspect Mourinho took him off to protect against him getting a red card.Dele and Doherty both proved they have nothing to offer us,again.

In another game that run and pass sets up the Kane equaliser.

Lamela often plays really well when the team is purring – or more, he’s one who influences the game in fits and starts, and if the team is motoring we carry his ineffective spells.

it’s why he’s often an effective sub, you seem as likely to get his good 15 minutes of football whether he starts or comes on late…either way that’s usually about all the high grade stuff you get

The rest is some niggling fouls and erratic possession

The ball out to Son was on all that first half and we found him countless times – but instead of the desire he showed scoring that solo goal against Arsenal each time he looked unsure/timid

The tactic worked, the player wasn’t at it in this instance

Levy is planning, a devious little plan, as we speak. 🤔👍🤔

You love blaming Lamela on that I disagree rest who cares? Eric Dier us a complete liability, more than Sanchez

Specifically referring to the first half where we invited pressure to the tune of letting Chelsea have about 25 attempts on goal while we hardly ventured into their half

All those trumpeting the Summer transfer window, the decision to being in Jose (without major investment in the team) and the supposed transformative effects of concrete and glass have some bloody explaining to do…. 🤔

A Chelsea supporting friend watched the derby the other week and said he couldn’t actually understand Spurs at all, in other words, despite watching football for 40 years he’d rarely I’d ever seen a side adopt our tactics. He was honestly dumbfounded and was looking for some insight…I just said it’s no longer strange to me, watching this side all season, normal service to some extent.

I explained there was a break 3 on 2 for us and maybe if Kane had been one of the three we go ahead – that that perhaps was the plan or could slightly justify the way we played/were set up.

Anyway, a Chelsea fan had never seen a Jose side play quite as deep AND sloppily AND lax king in belief and energy as that.

It may possibly point to Jose and the club/squad as is currently being a match made in hell unfortunately. I want Jose to shake us out of it but perhaps he is that ‘chequebook manager’ every accuses him of being. It’s his perfect (or near-perfect) 11 or bust. Individual errors and a pervading lack of togetherness are killing us at the moment anyway…

We are.a mess, we have no identity. Not a pragmatic defensive identity or a high energy pressing identity.

You sack one guy and replace him with tactically his polar opposite without a major refit of players it’s never going to end well.

only Levy would do such a thing because when it comes to football he is a complete dunce…

Can’t believe he started him in the Europa League after he had played two games and extra time. Looks knackered.

It will be interesting to see what the deal is with season tickets. I guess there won’t be full stadiums to start next season. You can’t charge full price for some sort of streaming season ticket.

The people calling for entertaining games where it’s still 50/50 if we win/lose/draw…this game was that

We seem to come onto the field both halves wanting to concede first in that 45 near enough every game – I’m lost for reasoning at this stage

When all hope of a rousing victory is extinguished we play some nice enough football – I guess the oppo are sitting off, but still, surely we can put a team the level of West Ham etc under pressure early each half?

That was a very generous score for alli I would have put a – in front of the 5 however. Felt bale and moura looked the most dangerous with some very good crosses by kane with a poor performance by son who was unable to convert any.

Honestly, I thought the end of the first half and most of the second half we were very good, but the damage was done. Once you go behind to a Moyes team you are facing an uphill battle to get into the game.

Most of the first half was terrible though. No excuse for how they played for 30 minutes.

Son looks tired – you can’t play him two games a week every week. You can’t play anyone that much. Needs more rotation – but then again is Europa more important than the league now? In which case we have other players that can play instead of him if he is shattered.

Bizarre the logic continuing selecting Sanchez and Dier. Bale – top trumps.

I think both Kane and Son have realised that this season will be yet another abject failure. A Carabo cup win will not satisfy world-class players with ambition. Kane will be 28 this year and Son 29. These are players who want to see titles and cups to their name and at the highest level. That is why I guess Son may not be rushing to put ink to a new deal. I think Kane is already thinking about perhaps protecting himself more as he does not want to risk the possibility of not getting that mega-deal to a real football club. Levy may well pull the trigger on Mourinho but he will not do so lightly with the termination payment consequences of such a move. Who can you bring in at this stage of the season? It looks to me very much like a parting of the ways in the summer and no CL football for another season unless we can pull off a miracle in the EUFA Cup. However with our defensive quality that looks very unlikely. .It is fortunate for the players, manager, and the owners that the fans are not there to watch this dross as I can only imagine what the reactions from the crowds would be. Levys little sphin*ter will be closing as he contemplates season ticket sales for next season.
