Tottenham may have to wait longer than expected for Champions League ban ramifications

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham wants to end this season in a Champions League place, but they are so far away from the top four now that it seems very unlikely that they can achieve that. The Lilywhites will restart this season with a seven points gap between them and fourth-placed Chelsea.

However, they are only four points behind Manchester United who are fifth and this is important because Manchester City has been banned from the Champions League for the next two seasons, it means the fifth-placed team would take their position if the ban is upheld. The Citizens are appealing their ban and Tottenham is one team that is paying close attention to developments in that regard.

The Lilywhites must be keen to know if a fifth-placed finish can earn them a Champions League slot for next season.

City have already appealed their ban and their appeal is set to start being deliberated from next week.

Both UEFA and interested teams like Tottenham would love to know the fate of the appeal quite early to avoid confusion.

However, the Mirror is claiming that Spurs might have to wait for longer than they expected to know their fate, this is because the appeal process could take up to two months.

A situation could easily develop that the season is complete and Spurs are in the fifth spot and in total limbo whether they will be competing in next seasons premier European competition.

It may also have an effect on any transfer business they can do early on if their participation in next seasons Champions League remains unknown.

No chance City will be banned for two years, wouldn’t surprise me if that UEFA crowd let them off the hook but changing the ban to a fine. That would really hurt one of the richest clubs in the world, wouldn’t it.
