Tottenham man has been a flop and will certainly leave this summer claims pundit

Davinson Sanchez may have played his last game for Tottenham reckons Noel Whelan, who also believes that the Colombian has been a flop at the club.

Spurs paid around £40m for his signature from Ajax in 2017 after he had helped the Dutch giants to reach the final of the Europa League.

He came to England as one of the sought-after players that summer and Spurs expected to have signed a defender that would serve them for years.

He is probably the fastest defender at the club, but he continues to underperform and may have been overrated when he joined them initially.

Whelan was responding to a Football London report earlier that said the defender’s agent was searching for a new club for him.

He told Football Insider that the defender has never impressed him and he has simply not been up to scratch.

He backs his sale because he isn’t of the right quality that Tottenham needs.

When asked by Football Insider if Sanchez would leave the club, Whelan said:

“Yeah, I think he’s played his last game for Spurs.

“I’m not a big fan, to be quite honest with you. When he has been in the side, which has not been that often, he has not produced the goods. He has been a bit of a failure really.

“Lots of players come into the English game and struggle and he is one of them. He has never got used to the tempo and the aggression of the Premier League.

“The quality has not been there since he has joined Tottenham.”

Everyone likes to slate this guy, but let’s take a closer look. He’s a natural right-sided CB that’s fast and strong, not a dynamic passer but good in the air and doesn’t really seem to like to get forward. When he was paired with Jan in 2017, a natural left-sided CB that likes to get forward, he looked pretty damn good. Since then, he’s been bounced to the left to play with a slowing Toby, or stuck on the right next to an out of position Dier. The few games he’s played with Japhet or Rodon he’s looked solid, but Spurs have never found a left footed replacement for Jan. And having Aurier on his right certainly hasn’t helped. Although Rodon is right footed, he can play on the left, so hopefully we can see a run of Sanchez-Rodon/Japhet and see how that works. Or maybe 3 at the back with Sanchez/Rodon/Davies before we run this guy out of town.

He’ll still be here next season unless Levy is willing to take a loss on him.

What club in their right mind would pay £40 million?

A guy who – I suspect – would benefit from being coached properly. Right now, there are just too many rookie mistakes in his game, which are unacceptable even at a much lower level than the PL.

I would like to hope he improves but I still wake up in cold sweat remembering him spinning beneath a simple long ball and letting Gundogan kill the game against City.
