Tottenham make Barca star with £438m release clause a ‘priority’ signing

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham are reportedly considering a shock move to raid Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter-Stegen as they continue to find a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.

Lloris has spent 10 years at Tottenham, making 426 appearances across all competitions. He has kept 145 clean sheets during that time. However, he has two years left on his contract with the London club.

According to French outlet Jeunes Footeux (h/t HITC), Conte has identified Ter Stegen as a “priority” signing for next summer.

The goalkeeper’s contract with Barcelona expires in just over three years. However, the Catalan club may be tempted to offload the 30-year-old in order to improve their financial situation.

The German international has a whopping £438 million transfer release clause in his contract with Barcelona, which he signed in 2020, but the La Liga giants are said to be open to selling him if the right offer is made.

The shot-stopper would be an incredible signing for Spurs and the ideal replacement for Lloris. Spurs could sign one of the best players in the world at his position in Ter Stegen. The German goalkeeper has demonstrated his ability to play out from the back during his time at Barcelona.

The report also names Alban Lafont as another player Spurs are keeping an eye on. He was recently called up by Didier Deschamps for the France team and is under contract at FC Nates until 2024.

Still though, he is playing for a big club that doesn’t pay wages.

This one’s a non-starter. Dean Henderson might be a good shout, would have to pay Utd top dollar.

If you don’t mind playing for a big club that doesn’t win trophies, you sign for Spurs…

You have now linked us with Oblak of Atletico Madrid, Meslier of Leeds and now Stegen of Barca in the last week. I suggest that you try and give these stories some thought before you write them.

3 year contract with a team set up to win stuff, seems unlikely he’ll be moving to Spurs. Although the contract in question is probably written on a cig packet in invisible ink, so there’s always hope…
