Tottenham in talks to sign defender that is not Milan Skriniar

By Bruce Grove -

Spurs are close to completing a deadline day move for Swansea’s Joe Rodon which will bring an end to their search for a new centre-back.

The Lilywhites have been looking for a new centre back all summer and they have tried to land the likes of Milan Skriniar and Antonio Rudiger before now.

Both deals have not been successful and that is why they have left it late to seal the signing of a new centre back.

They say “better late than never”, and Sky Sports is reporting that Spurs may just land a centre back before the transfer deadline tonight.

Rodon is one of the highest-rated defenders in the English second division and he has been a target of some of the top sides in the Premier League, including Manchester City and Manchester United.

He is one of the players who helped Swansea to reach the semi-finals of the Championships playoff last season and he has continued to play a key role for them.

Spurs bid up to £35m for Skriniar, but the report claims that Rodon might move to the north London side for £18m today.

If Spurs does sign him, Jose Mourinho will no longer have a reason why he shouldn’t help the Lilywhites win a trophy this season because he will have one of the most complete squads in England.

Me neither, all mouth no traazerz mate! 😂

Seriously though, I never understood the fuss about him, very fast at one point but that’s about it. If he hadn’t have been English he’d have been ignored.

If the Rodon deal goes through it will be one for the future.I personally wanted a CB who could teach Sanchez and Dier a thing or two, challenge them straight away for the First XI. 2 disrupted seasons in the Championship, an endorsement from Ryan Giggs and a reputation to play like John Stones is not going to excite me. I remember Phil Jones and Alfie Mawson being the next big thing, even John Stones. I agree about Skriniar, he was very overpriced and if he was that good, Inter would not have looked to get rid. I do think he is better than Sanchez and Dier though. Who knows? If Rodon signs and he is good, we’ll all have a Rod On!

I laugh when I hear people say “bringing a player from the championship is a risk,”they said it when I was beating the drum for Ollie Watkins to sign for Spurs. Why is it okay to bring players from France(N’Jie,N’Koudou,Stambouli) and nobody says it’s a risk bringing players from France.Or (Fazio,Soldado) it’s a risk bringing players from Spain. If you do your scouting well you will shorten the risk on buying a dud no matter what country or level they play at.The Championship is an honest league were nobody can hide, played in the same climate in the same country as the PL and more clubs should be buying players from here as they are quite often better than taking a bigger risk abroad.

I know Winks is different to Hojbjerg, thats kinda my point. Winks isnt a ball player, dribbler, tackler or anything really. Hojbjergs simple passing and taking up good positions is a skill that Winks could do better.

At the moment Hojbjerg is the first name on the team sheet (after Kane and Sonny!)

I wonder if Man U don’t fancy him? Bringing a C-ship player into the PL is always a risk.

I think Mou wanted Skriniar but he was too pricey. Shame would have sent out a massive statement of intent to the rest of the league that we’re going for the title, not just top 4.

I’ve always said Winks is not suited to DMF because he is not physically strong enough.
On the occasions he has been allowed to get upfield he can move the ball forward in a meaningful way.I feel he would appreciate the opportunity to show what he can do further forward.

Now Jose has strengthened the squad he will be like most of them,a squad player.Mourinho will want to rotate when he can to prevent the risk of unnecassary injuries. They will all get game time.

I think Jose knows he’s “lacking as a first team Tottenham player. He’s a segley/Howells, just not quite it. Price being right he can go. God knows what he’s worth. If he hadn’t have come up through the ranks and play for us already we wouldn’t be trying to sign him.

I still remember that wicked ball over the top he played for Kane which he finished that was slightly off side, he can do it, just needs to do it more so he it feels normal to him.

I think he knows Jose wants more from hom

That is exactly what this signing is about.
Rodon will be ready to play big games by then, Jose will play him in Europa League group games or cup games with Tanganga & one other in a 3, they say he’s good in a 2 or 3.

Skriniar I was hearing fell out with Conte coz he favours a 3 lately & Skriniar is really only good in a 2.
He ain’t all that.

Sense. I hope you’re right regarding winks. He’s a sideways baller coz he can’t spot or unable to play cheeky/savvy forward options. For me he ain’t good/talented enough. Watched him grow as well. Never really rated him. I wonder if he’s any good at five a side? He ain’t a natural born baller.

Japhet? If your good enough your old enough ” with most managers if not all I reckon. Jose’s brought a few into the first team squad. Coz he’s not know for it that doesn’t mean he can’t. Joses a veteran well traveled football man. Probably nothing in the game he can’t handle/deal with

PEH is a very different type of midfielder to Winks. He’s more like Wanyama if anything and we’ve needed an enforcer type midfielder since Wanyama’s fitness began to decline.

It enables you to balance the midfield better, why we didn’t bring a player like that in last summer I have no idea.

Winks has been made the scapegoat when he’s not a specialist ball winner at all. He’s been given the role because he’s the closest we had In the squad.

He’ll be competing with Tanguy, and Sissoko for a berth. His game is about passing, moving keeping it moving. He’s played lots of square balls because he’s often been the last man in midfield. Would like to see him for Sissy alongside PEH and Tanguy, his real game might come back out…

How what fits with Jose? Playing young players? What’s wrong with being conscious of Re-sale values? Never keep a new car for more than 2-3 years. What’s wrong with knowing that.

Inverted wingers means a sacrifice in quality balls into the box. Take some down the outside they’re fkd and most don’t even bother to look up when trying to put crosses in with their weaker foot.

What makes you say that? I can’t see any players coming in without the player being run by Jose first. If he’s a waste of a squad place (manager not rating the “punt, he wont be coming in. Unless levy has a separate budget for punts/young British players. Final say is Jose’s I reckon.

Hojberg is the glue to our midfield. The balance this guy brings is beautiful.

Limited Winks needs to watch this guy and literally copy his game, not sure if Winks reads the game well enough though but the role Hojberg does it what Winks should have been doing this last 18 months or so.

Random interjection over.

Thankfully, the window has been more than decent. We just don’t want to be regretting not signing an established centre back come the November-December period when the big games come thick and fast (City, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Leicester and Wolves as well as some Europa ties).

There’s a piece done by Higginbottom and Hinchcliffe on Sky website that says this guy is the real deal. He loves to defend and is obsessed with clean sheets so he sounds like a Jose player to me. He’s had a few injuries in the last few years so hes been a slow burner.

Form Wiki: ‘Rodon is a ball-playing centre-back, and has earned comparisons to John Stones.’

Sounds like where you’d head if you get knocked back on capturing John Stones then.

No idea how this one will work out but another defender is all good, I would say he’ll get in the way of Tanganga’s development – but he seems to have a few injuries so safety first.
