Tottenham Could Buy Back Marcus Edwards For Just £6.8m

By Joe Fish -

Marcus Edwards was supposed to be the next big thing at Tottenham.

The skilful winger was dubbed ‘mini-Messi’ by Mauricio Pochettino in 2016, as The Mirror details, but failed to live up to this moniker unfairly slapped on him at 17, and left on a free transfer before the start of this season.

However, it appears as though Spurs have safeguarded ourselves in case Edwards does go on to fulful the potential that he promised as a teenager, with Football London reporting that we insisted on the inclusion of a 50% sell-on fee when allowing him to join Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes.

And it’s a good job too, as Edwards is starting to look like the player that we once hoped he would become, scoring four goals and contributing seven assists in 17 league appearances in his debut season for Vitoria. He also scored at the Emirates in the Europa League against Arsenal; the legend.

Football London understands that Edwards has a £13.6m release clause in his Vitoria contract, so we currently stand to make £6.8m if the 21-year-old is sold. This clause also effectively gives us a buy-back option of £6.8m should we ever want to give the England youth international another shot.

Edwards has not proven us wrong yet to the extent where a return to Spurs seems plausible. But his performances might have put him on the radar of bigger clubs in Portugal, or across the rest of the continent, and £6.8m would be a handy addition to a very depleted transfer budget this summer.

He clearly had to grow up a bit and get out of the comfortable safe environment of the club he’d been at from a kid to flourish and learn about the world beyond. Good luck to him and if this has all made a man of him then fantastic.

He might decide to stay on the continent now as it might suit him better and end up who knows, Barca one day? Messi will never play for an English club remember.

I’d advise him to stay out there, absorb the culture. If you come back right now Jose is never going to play you as a regular at your age. Besides he’s too small and tricky for Jose’s tactics.

Good luck Marcus but keep away from the poisoned atmosphere of ENIC FC son…

A comment of mine wouldn’t go through. (No swearing). I’d swap Marcus for winks all day long I would. Anyone who wouldn’t doesn’t favor attacking football.
