Top six is not for everyone but it is for Tottenham – Europa League has been confirmed

By Bruce Grove -

It was a performance that we have come to expect from Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham but it is the end result that matters and Tottenham are confirmed in sixth position and in next seasons Europa League.

It is easy for me to write how poor and dire the performance was but there is no point, in fact, I could just write a template out for how Spurs played and bring it out most weeks, however, that is missing the point.

Mourinho gets results and when he woke up this morning all he would have been interested in was securing a Europa League spot and he will go to bed this evening with a smile on his face knowing he has achieved exactly that.

It would have been horrible waiting for the FA Cup final and hoping Chelsea win and you just know Arsenal would have won the damn thing and knocked us out but they will not have that opportunity now.

It has been a horrid season, there is no glossing over that but we have finished as a top six team and will be in Europe and all things considered, that is satisfactory.

We will all be demanding better next season but until then, we can sit back knowing we are Kings of North London, in the top six, still, and Coronavirus permitting, touring Europe next season.

But he’s only played a total of about 12 minutes.

I see your point, but City finished second and scored 102 goals in the process, playing excellent football. We are a total antithesis, having to be thankful Jose saved us by not doing very much. He didn’t sort our defence out or have a discernible attacking plan. For me, there were only two good sides in the league, Chelsea couldn’t defend and until Bruno turned up, Utd were a mess. If Jose was such a good manager he would have contrived a way of getting us in the top 4. When Kane and Son were injured he didn’t have an answer. I put the blame on Levy, but we still had a team of internationals and I expected and demanded more from the highest paid manager. When he was having a good start we were closing the gap on Chelsea and we went to Stamford, where Chelsea couldn’t buy a win and we got whipped by Frank’s amazing tactics! We win that and the game was on. That result epitomises our campaign for me. When it counted Mourinho and the team failed.

The other 21 games they didn’t lose and were tricky. Anyone can lose to a lesser team on the day Norwich lost 27 games but City found them too tricky early in the season.

My take is that we’re not that good but we have found a way to beat the teams that try to dominate possession. When it comes to sides like Palace or Sheff Utd, we still struggle to break Them down because they don’t leave the same space behind the defence.

I think we’ll get better, and a personnel refresh will help too. Whether we’ll be successful or not who knows only time will tell.

Palace can’t have been that difficult to beat, they lost 17 games, that’s nearly half their games from the entire league campaign. Shows how far we are behind the 8 ball if you think it is a tricky fixture.

My son reckons there is a scenario which would keep us out of the Ropey. Apparently if Wolves win the Ropey this season there would only be 2 Ropey League places available to English clubs. One of these would go to the Goons if they won the FA Cup the other to Leicester. I haven’t checked it out but he is usually right.

We have done well against sides who have attacked us. Against sides that sat back and countered, we have been poor. Palace like to sit back too so that’s why I knew we would struggle. Neither side left their defence exposed, and but for a piece of Kane magic and some comical defending, it should have been 0-0.

It’s too simplistic to say palace are crap so we should smash them. They have in fact been very unlucky on their losing run, and they played against all the top teams. They are always hard to beat and always put in a shift.

Did I hear right? Skipp hasn’t been on the losing side in 15 appearances for us.

My cat’s friends dad’s mates great-grand draughter’s auntie’s car, which was once leaned on by Micky Hazzard for a photo, used to be owned by a bloke who reckons that most of the people working at Spurs had mixed views about Poch leaving and Jose arriving. Honest.

Some positives, Japhet Tanganga looks good, we have Lo Celso and Bergwign and they will get a
lot more game time. We’re still miles away from winning a title and we are so dependent on the stadium being filled most weeks that the Covid situation has probably hurt us a lot more than the Oil and Gas companies.

You do know Palace had lost 7 of the last 8, and the game they won was against a woeful Bournemouth? It was only going to be tricky for a woeful team! So, I guess you were right. I am not watching the FA Cup final, I hope they both lose.

Difficult to find anything positive for the season , which is now thankfully over and done with .
Looking forward, I’m not feeling optimistic about next season and have no expectations at this stage, I think Jose has to improve the performances , that is the most important issue whatever the squad he has to work with. I can take having less possession against top teams if results come, but the lesser teams we should be dominating and attack more, instead of settling for one goal margins, that’s it for now, let’s see what the summer brings.

Funny as friends of mine at United had very very different view. Still, people change.

I spent an hour with the mum of one of our players earlier (walking her Scotty) the academy players wanted poch and his staff gone. Especially the goal keeping coach. They all love Jose. Jose doesn’t take himself too seriously is one of the reasons why. Not gonna say anymore.

I thought this Palace match would be tricky. They won’t commit men forward so it was going to be difficult to break them down. The defending on the corner that led to their goal was horrible. We’ve got plenty of work to do no doubt about that.

Goodness knows whether the transfer window will help us much or not. It will be fairly excruciating, I’m fairly sure about that. At least with 6th place and Europa league we go into next season with an air of respectability.

For the FA Cup final, I’ll be a Chelsea fan, but it’ll feel pretty dirty.

Much been made of the progress made under Mourinho who took us over when we were a lowly 14th. At the time of Poch’s sacking we were only 3 points off 5th, yet we finished 6th. We were 9 points off 4th, we closed that gap by 2 points in the end, playing a brand of football I am embarrassed by. There is absolutely nothing positive to come out of this season for me and please do not tell me Mourinho is going to turn things round. The numbers and performances show Mourinho did not work any magic. Luckily in 10 years time this season will be a distant memory. Onwards and upwards. LEVY OUT.
