The pull of Jose Mourinho could be strong enough to lure high profile hitman to Tottenham

By Bruce Grove -

Diego Costa might be lured to Tottenham by the prospect of working with Jose Mourinho again.

The Brazil-born Spain international has emerged as a transfer target for Spurs in recent weeks as they look for a backup striker to Harry Kane.

He has entered the final year of his current deal at Atletico Madrid and the Spaniards might be happy to let him leave them this summer.

He has Premier League experience which will be a huge factor as Spurs look for a new striker, and even more importantly, his Premier League experience came under Mourinho as he helped fire the Portugueses Chelsea side to the Premier League title.

A reunion with the manager that brought him to England initially might help Tottenham challenge for the Premier League title and he spoke about his relationship with the Spurs manager a few years back.

“Obviously, working with [José] Mourinho puts you in a great position,” he told Portuguese TV network Sport TV four years ago.

“These years with him were good. The last year [wasn’t], since we weren’t getting results on the pitch and things weren’t working as expected by everyone.

“And some stuff happened, but nothing too serious.

“My relationship with Mourinho… I say this to everyone, ‘every person has a good and a bad side’.

“But Mourinho and I had a good relationship. He always joked with us, gave us plenty of freedom, he talked with us…

“He was someone who also listened a lot.

“There were a lot of good things. So when I look back, there were a few moments that I made mistakes; plays which I shouldn’t have made given all the love and respect he gave to me.

“Thus, I have nothing against him. If there is someone who should have something against someone is Mourinho himself [towards me].

“And I believe he doesn’t have that.

“I had a good rapport with him.”

Costa didn’t have the best scoring campaigns the last time out, but a change of scenery might bring back the best in him.

The lure of a bigger pay day elsewhere will be stronger than the desire to reunite with Jose.

I do believe he was offered to Tottenham, not Tottenham showing an interest. Still would be a great to get a proper nasty c#nt in the side. No brainer if the fee and wages reflect his age.
