That was a decent performance from Tottenham against tough opponents

By Bruce Grove -

They used to say go to Stoke City in winter on a Monday night and then see let’s see what you are made of. That now applies to Burnely, who take the same sort of approach to games against big teams.

Was it frustrating? Yes, it was and that is because we have come to expect five, six and three goals every game, that is never going to happen, there are always going to be tough games like this.

It is winning these sort of games when it is a pure grind that separates winners from also-rans and tonight, Tottenham came through this test with three points.

No doubt there will be some criticism of Jose Mourinho’s team selection and that is understandable but he chose the right players for this game, it was never going to be a free-flowing game that suited the likes of Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale.

This was a game that needed players that would get stuck in and they did, they matched Burnley for intensity and determination and in the end, that extra bit of class was the difference.

A clean sheet, three points, no injuries, no sending offs and now just two points below the summit.

Yes, overall, that was a good performance by Spurs considering the circumstances and who the opponents were.

In the same way that every outfield player scores goal not just the striker.

I’m not talking about corner clearances, I’m talking about the goal line clearance.
When did you last see him do that?
A striker clears a corner, then straight away thinks about breaking up the pitch & scoring, Kane is taking more responsibility, don’t think for one second Jose has nothing to do with that.

He doesn’t win titles just coz he has good players.
Kane is producing more, more consistently coz he’s being pushed by Jose.

Jose didn’t get Kane playing that way. He’s always had it in his game, the number of corners he has cleared is impressive.

Yep failing to acquire Grealish for a decent sum at the time grates me but thats history now!

I thought it was great to get the result last night.

Burnley defended as a unit and they are hard b’stards to a man, elbows flying, crunching tackles.

I nearly cried when Kane powered through two tackles only to have his shot forcibly blocked resulting in him whincing and holding his ankle, nooooooooooo, but he was fine.

3 points last night is the difference between a mid table season (last year) and a contending season.

Yep, as I mentioned on the night, maybe 5, 10 mins before the goal I mentioned this was a night for Vinícius to do what Wood was doing for them, then Jose was getting him ready to come on & we scored, then Jose thought save Vinícius for Thurs

Exactly right, Davies is much more defensively minded than Sergio.

Maybe West ham last 10 mins would not have happened with Davies playing that last 10

So important that Jose has got Kane playing like he had Drogba playing for Chelsea defensively.

Bale is not close to being ready for a Prem game & Reg I think Jose wants to save for Thurs & maybe he’s kind of rewarding Davies in his favoured position for Thursdays very decent performance.

We will need Sergio for the big teams of which there are a good few these days,
Davies can handle these type games, although we all wanted to see Sergio playing

Yeah, I think you’re right there. He went to grind it out. Fair enough I suppose, I’d rather we did em 0-3 like Pep but this is Jose innit…

And not drawn to Everton at home either… it’s a long season but we’re up in the right area. Top four with all the new players should be fairly straightforward this season.

He is not very good and regi is better ,can’t you just get others back to mark at set pieces? Anyway doesn’t matter…

Burnley have an aerial threat from set pieces and Jose preferred Davies for that reason.

That’s okay when the goal went in and the points in the bag,but up until then Burnley looked more likely to score. If we hadn’t won I believe everyone would have been livid with the tempo and performance.

Its all about the points against them kinda teams man. The performance is irrelevant. I wouldn’t read that much into it .

A laboured ugly one Nil to the Spurs, what champions are made of!!
Both full backs disappointing. Whilst Davies is Davies, I’d be fooled if it’s the same Doherty who played for Wolves as the guy was poor defensively and offensively.

A good result, but not a good performance far too slow,no movement or urgency. The most important thing was the win and the three points but to be honest we didn’t create enough chances and looked lacklustre.

I think regi would have done rather well and strected their back four.

The subs bench starting to make the difference now.

Lamela on and wins the game effectively.

Vinny and Bale were primed in case that just didn’t happen.
