Talks have been held between Tottenham and defender shining at Euro 2020

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham has held talks with Southampton’s Jannik Vestergaard as they seek to improve their squad this summer.

The Lilywhites have plans to have a solid squad in place when next season starts after they named Nuno Espirito Santo as their latest manager.

The former Wolves boss needs all the support he can get as he prepares to help them become a top-four club again and one position he needs to sort out is the defence.

Spurs added Joe Rodon and Matt Doherty to their squad last summer, but they still struggled at the back.

They have now turned their attention towards Vestergaard who is enjoying a fine summer with the Denmark national team at Euro 2020.

The Daily Mail reports that they have already held talks over the transfer of the 28-year-old formerly of Borussia Monchengladbach.

Southampton is an ambitious club that would want to keep their best players, however, his current deal expires at the end of next season.

The Lilywhites will look to convince him to join them this summer instead of signing a new contract with the Saints.

They signed his national teammate, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg last summer when he also had just a year left on his contract at Saint Marys.

We will have some one in defense other than Harry Kane who can head a ball. I will take him just for that, and he is not too bad in the oppenent’s box either. When was the last time Sanchez or Dier headed a ball clear or come close to getting one on goal from corners.

We’d still leak goals with a flat back 8 and 2 holding midfielders! Man City play with no striker, so we sell Kane and all is good.

Adding Doherty and Rodon to our defence last season was never going to improve it. Rodon was young with no top flight experience. Same with Reggie. Doherty should be investigated under trades description for using the profession of ‘footballer’ on his passport. Our defence was awful and still is. If NES can sort that I’ll be a happy man. The big Dane and his mate Andersen would be a good start.

I’d rather have Long Covid than Dier and Sanchez.

In other news. Who had contacted Spurs to take the deadwoods off our hands. Incomings must be matched or surpass by out goings.

I would rather have Vestergaard over Sanchez or Dier. I know comparing anyone against those two is a low bar to be using as a metric for a top quality CB, but Vestergaard is an imposing specimen and a no-nonsense, traditional type of CB, who I believe would stiffen the centre of our defence. I would pair him alongside Toby, with hopefully this Japanese lad on the right side of a back three and continue to develop Rodon and Tanganga. I would sell Dier and Sanchez. Doherty and Reguilon would be your natural wing-backs, with Nuno likely to get the best out of the Irishman, who really struggled last season, playing him in his best position.

Buying a player who comes from a Southampton side that couldn’t defend, yeah good idea !

Positional sense is 90% the art to defending.

Sanchez will never possess it, Davies ball watches constantly and Toby has it in abundance but his legs are going.
Rodon gets beat down the sides too easily and in fairness to the big Southampton stopper he reads the game very well and is obviously good in the air, he links up with PEH well and is a signing I’d be up for.
Naturally 3 years ago I wanted the likes of Koulibaly and Chiellini but this is Levy shopping in Poundland and this lad is decent for the likely fee.

We need CBs who can handle the press and pass their way out of it (or at least clear the ball effectively). I noticed a few times last season when our defenders got pressed and harried they got nervous and gave the ball away frequently. Even Villa did that to us late in the season and outplayed and beat us.

think you make a fair point Snitz . Over the past couple of seasons I have heard the plaudits and the derision of the majority of CB’s or defenders we have at our disposal- Tanganga , Rodon , Dier , Sanchez , Alderveireld , Davies , Aurier , Doherty , Rose , Vertonghen and Reguilon even of late . However dismissive you might be of them collectively , each one of these players have had tremendous games individually and every one of them has represented their National team – with honour .
Therefore might it be fair that ALL of those named are not quite as poor as is portrayed and that maybe the way they were used might have played its part ?
Playing for Spurs brings with it a pressure largely unknown at lesser clubs [ I’m sure Man U fans agree] and if a crowd is convinced by media reports , it is an almighty cross to bear to regain their trust.
I believe we have a solid defence amongst those names but maybe a ‘Van Dyke ‘ style of leader to find the system to implement , it certainly has shown that in his absence Liverpool looked more vulnerable .
Not one of the above would sell for less than £10m when operating with confidence , so why not try to stimulate , not denigrate ?
I’m a true Lilly and think we do seem overly harsh on the players at times , we’d love additions to the squad [ its exciting !] but sometimes the acquisitions aren’t quite the players you think they are .
Give Nuno adequate time to sort ‘his way ‘ and maybe make that Virgil signing that makes a good squad “great”. COYS !!!!!!!

Although I would not be disappointed and also think he is a higher level than a Coady, I feel there are better value/ long term options out there.

Saw him in a few games in the EUROs, and he seems very strong, dominant in the air and has an eye for a pass between the lines (he brilliantly found the run of a winger just before Denmark’s winner against us).

Turns 29 in a month, so probably could do a decent job for two or three years at a relatively low price, given his contract situation. If it means no more, or much less of, Dier-Sanchez, then it’s a resounding yes.

Is he better than we already have yes maybe, but at Spurs you get scrutinised far more than at Southampton IMO

Tidy player remains to be seen if he is that good ??

That must be at least 8 centre backs we are buying, I know Nuno likes to sit back and counter but this is ridiculous 😂
