Stick or Twist? The 3 Tottenham Players Whose Contracts Expire In 2021 [opinion]

By Joe Fish -

We all know about the Class of 2020 when it comes to expiring contracts.

Jan Vertonghen is going, Christian Eriksen is gone, and Toby Alderweireld spared us more lost millions by signing a new deal in the final hours.

To avoid making the same mistake again, now is the time to start thinking about the Class of 2021. The sequel lacks the star power of the original, but there are still some decisions to be made by the Tottenham hierarchy.

All contracts expire in June 2021 according to transfermarkt.com.

Eric Dier

The biggest decision to make is over Dier who has become a depreciating asset, both on the pitch and in the transfer market. His recent reversion to centre-back seems like a last-ditch effort from both Dier and Jose Mourinho to find a role for a guy who is well-liked by the manager, players, and fans.

But I’m not sure he can be a starter in defence or in midfield anymore, which means a move in the next transfer window might suit everybody.

Oliver Skipp

The 19-year-old midfielder looked like he was on the verge of a first-team breakthrough before the season’s postponement, starting successive games including a maiden Premier League start of the campaign at Burnley.

Footbal Insider understands that Skipp is highly thought of by Mourinho so a new long-term contract could be imminent, followed by more first-team exposure or possibly a loan whenever the 2020-21 season gets going.

Gedson Fernandes

The Portuguese is an exception as the next transfer window is too soon to make a decision on whether to make his loan from Benfica permanent. At a price of £56m, according to The Guardian, we’d need to be sure we were buying more than a squad player and the sample size so far is too small.

Gedson has provided us with glimpses of his energetic ball-carrying style, but £56m is a lot of money to have two Moussa Sissokos at the club and the 21-year-old will have to show a lot more to earn himself a future at Spurs.

Sell Dier, England spoiled him. His tackle on Ramos will never be forgotten! Keep Skipp. See if he can turn into a forward thinking Winks. Send Gedson home, from what I have seen he costs too much for too little.
