Spurs man vows to show improved form for his national team

By Bruce Grove -

Matt Doherty has accepted responsibility for not playing for the Republic of Ireland national team as good as he plays for his club in the Premier League.

The defender joined the Lilywhites this summer after 10 years at Wolves, the last two of which saw him emerge only behind Trent Alexander-Arnold as the best right-back in the Premier League.

He has also been impressive for Spurs in the early days of his time with Jose Mourinho’s men.

He is away with the national team at the moment and as they prepare to face Slovakia, he has admitted that he needs to do better for his national team.

The wing-back admitted that his Ireland team doesn’t see the ball as much as his club does, but that doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t be doing better.

He claimed that he will find a way to get his performances for the national team up.

‘You could say I’ve not been the same player for Ireland as I have in the Premier League,’ he said from Bratislava via Mail Online.

‘I guess we play differently. We probably don’t have as much of the ball as we do at club level. I don’t necessarily have a problem with that.

‘It’s up to me to find a solution. It’s up to me to find a way to bring out my best game when I put on the Ireland jersey. It’s nobody else’s fault, nobody else is to blame for that other than myself. I need to find the way or the path to bring out my best game here.’
