“Serial champion replaces serial choker”, “Modern-day football lunacy” Mixed Media Reactions To Mourinho

By The Boy -

One thing you don’t get when appointing Jose Mourinho as your coach, is a tick in your ‘no publicity’ box.

Rob Beasley was a confidante journalist to Jose during his first Chelsea era, and the former Sun journalist didn’t mince his words on Sky news on Saturday morning [approx 08:35hrs], when he called the situation at Spurs as he saw it, “Serial champion replaces serial choker”.

Football London however are clearly still mourning the dismissal of Mauricio Pochettino and one has to question some elements of the sentiment on display.

“It’s not as if Tottenham had a manager at the helm who nobody liked and they had all lost respect for him, someone they were desperate to see the back of. It’s been quite the opposite.”

This conflicts with both the performances, the results, Pochettino’s own description of the squad being at it’s most unsettled during his tenure, not to mention Jason Burt of The Telegraph flagging up Harry Kane’s dissatisfaction at the club.

Dave Kidd for The Sun called Mourinho, “The old rascal”.

“There was a fire in the belly, there were winking eyes and there were warm words on his lips.”

Kidd went on to warn us, though…

“This won’t last, of course. With Mourinho, it never does. Soon, there will be internal conflict, imaginary sieges and media blackouts.”

Paul Wilson for the Guardian refuses to rule out Spurs making a significant impact in the Champions League again, this season.

Spurs look a good bet for the knockout stages as they prepare to host Olympiakos on Tuesday.

If Jose were able to keep the Champions League cash coming at Tottenham, he would endear himself to Levy no end.

For those readers really unhappy with the appointment, then let me introduce you bedfellow Stan Collymore to you.

Stan, for The Mirror, is raging over the entire business and one cannot help but wonder if there is bad blood between the two men?

Daniel Levy’s decision to sack Mauricio Pochettino and hire Jose Mourinho is modern-day football lunacy.

One thing is for certain, Spurs are certainly generating plenty of opinion.

Exactly. He’s repeating the same old spin 2 days in. It’s a PR joke. Any talk of winning from him is disingenuous cos he’s already admitted he couldn’t and can’t challenge City and Liverpool even with Utds budget which is far, far beyond the scrimping of Levy. Plus the squad he has is in need of totally revamping. These people as I’ve said before are MASTERS at minipulation and expectation management. This is more of the same. Maybe Jose could scrape us a League or FA cup but that’s not much of a return for selling your soul.

What that one game yesterday has highlighted to me , was the difference in mindset the players showed, they had a purpose and played with a confidence in how they were set up. We faded late on, but I expect performances will improve , so that should not detract from the dominance in possession for 65 mins. or so.
As shocked as I was to see Poch go, I think the players needed the change from his stale philosophy which was never going to win trophies imo, and my main worry now is whether the players will take to the total contrast in mentality of Mourinho . I have always believed this squad should have lifted silverware of any kind over the past few seasons, and we now have a chance with a prolific trophy gatherer, lets hope it finally happens.

Top four from ENIC’s perspective.

I have no doubt whatsoever that Jose wants to win things with us, but a lot will depend on Levy’s backing.

They’re an odd couple to be sure.

“Top four? Jose don’t play that game. He’s here to win for Tottenham and himself. All that needs addressing he’ll address. All the duds and want a ways will soon be gone.

Mourinho’s appointment is a PR and marketing masterstroke from Levy, as it reinstall’s fresh hope amongst our fans, whilst hugely increasing brand exposure.

My concern is that Jose is simply here to fulfill a top four brief every season – at least from ENIC’s perspective – and the limited funds at his disposal will reflect that. No doubt ‘the special one’ is capable of taking us to the fabled next level, but not without a defensive overhaul, and a viable Eriksen replacement. Can’t decide if Jose’s initial ‘we’re a great squad and don’t need signings’ noises, are simply motivational man management, or that reptillian Levy rhetoric.

I’m cautiously optimistic that, at the very least, Jose will red pill a few more Spurs fans should it all go Pete Tong with ‘Mr. Levy’

COYS!

Watching Wolves highlights and not surprised to see 2 more players excelling that were available 18 months ago when we were being told there was nothing out there to improve us. Mourihnos and Traore who I said 2 years ago could be worth a pint when he was at Boro. Strong and lightening quick, good final product too. Add them to the list. Spin, lies and Amazon videotape.

Actually, I watched that Mourinho doc and he and Redknapp have alot in common if not on the entertainment side. They both state football is very simple. You keep it that way and don’t complicate matters, which is correct.

I have to say that I am Team Jose. ENIC will never change, only the managers/ head coaches. He brings a lot to the table, most of it good. Hopefully we will reap the benefits of that. Had a chuckle at the previous blog about Redknapp’s carefully thought out analysis of Jose. This coming from a man who thinks Tactics are breath mints.”Run abaht a bit” covers a lot of scenarios really. Who needs tactics?
