On the final day of the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur and former right-back Serge Aurier agreed to terminate the last year left on his contract. So for nearly a month, the 28-year-old was without a team.
Aurier would eventually sign with Villarreal CF in La Liga. Nonetheless, before he chose to ink a deal with the Spanish side, there were rumors over possibly staying in the Premier League.
The right-back saw his name connected with Arsenal FC and Everton FC, but Aurier took to Instagram where he wanted to clear up any rumors of possibly joining the north London rival or any other English after a couple of years at Tottenham.
“I have never seen myself at another club in England!” Aurier said. “I didn’t see myself joining the enemy because I have too much respect for our club, for our history, and for all our moments shared together.”
“First of all, I would like to thank all the Spurs fans for these four wonderful seasons with you. They were all different, but I leave with some great memories. I really enjoyed playing the game wearing your colors proudly.”
Tottenham had to move on from Aurier following the transfer of Emerson Royal from FC Barcelona to take over the right-back position. Managing Director of Football Fabio Paratici began to overhaul the squad’s backline and felt it was time to close Aurier’s chapter with Tottenham.
The guy who played for us days after his brother passed away. I respect serge.
He was just another cheap (ish) punt from Levy. Worked out like most of them have.
Fair play to him for saying nice things, however I’ll take it with a slight pinch of salt. He’s probably had enough of the Premiership, where he always looked slightly out of his depth defensively…
