Senior Tottenham figures not happy with who Levy wants to replace Conte with

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham are reportedly in hunt for a new manager with Antonio Conte’s contract coming to an end in the summer and there have been no indications that he is keen on extending his stay.

Conte guided Spurs to a stunning top 4 finish on the last day of the season last year and has this season once again put them in a good position to finish top 4. They are also still in the FA Cup and the Champions League, keeping their hopes a trophy alive.

But regardless of how this season fares for the Italian, there are rumours that he may leave the club come summer, with Juventus his likely destination.

With that in mind, Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy has set his sights on bringing back former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentinian spent five years at the club, transforming them into a top Premier League side that consistently finished in the top four. Under his leadership, the team mounted a title challenge in the 2016/2017 season but ultimately fell short, finishing second. They also had a remarkable run in the Champions League in 2018/2019, reaching the final but losing to Liverpool.

Reports suggest that Levy still has a good relationship with Pochettino and is keen on hiring him back. However, according to journalist Dean Jones, not all senior figures within the club share this sentiment. Some are said to be wary of returning to a setup that was working several years ago and feel that the club needs to look forward rather than backward.

He told GiveMeSport:

“Insiders admit it would not make sense for Conte to leave now but believe it is feasible this is his final season in charge: And that could open the door for Pochettino.

“He remains of interest to chairman Daniel Levy and Pochettino’s current job status will obviously have appeal at a time when he is out of work.

“But the pull for a Poch return is not wholly felt around the club, where it is understood some senior figures feel it may be unwise to step back to such a set up.”

Regardless, Pochettino’s credentials speak for themselves. He enjoyed tremendous success during his time at the club and is still a fan favourite. His sacking was a surprise to many, coming just a few months after he guided the club to the Champions League final. With his quality as a manager, there is no doubt that he would be a great replacement for Conte should the Italian decide to leave.
