Antonio Conte’s contract with the club is set to expire in the summer, and there are currently no reports suggesting that the Italian will be signing a new contract.
This has led to numerous rumors linking Argentinian manager Mauricio Pochettino with a potential return to Tottenham.
In the latest update from journalist Ben Jacobs, it was revealed that Daniel Levy and Pochettino still maintain an excellent relationship, both professionally and personally. Jacobs stated that should the Spurs job become available, Pochettino would undoubtedly be interested, but he would not be the only candidate.
Jacobs also noted that Tottenham’s hierarchy has no issues with bringing Pochettino back to the club. However, they must first establish their plans with Conte, and if the Italian departs, Pochettino is one to watch.
He told TeamTalk:
“Levy and Pochettino have got an excellent relationship. Both on a professional and personal level, they are still in touch.
“From Levy’s point of view, and the wider club hierarchy, there will be no problems bringing Pochettino back. And I think that should the Spurs job become available, Poch would be very interested, but he won’t be the only candidate.
“I think that Pochettino will be there. But first and foremost, Tottenham need to establish with Antonio Conte exactly what the plan is. But if the eventuality comes where Conte leaves, and obviously that contract is ticking down, then Pochettino is one to watch.”
Pochettino’s previous tenure at Tottenham was highly successful, as he transformed the club into a top-four side during his five-year stint. He consistently led them to top-four finishes, and the 2016/2017 season saw the team fall just short of the Premier League title, finishing in second place.
Under Pochettino’s guidance, Tottenham also reached the Champions League final in the 2018/2019 season. Although they ultimately lost to Liverpool, it was still one of the club’s best European runs.
Given Pochettino’s previous success at the club, it is no surprise that Tottenham fans are excited about the prospect of his potential return. In addition, Levy’s good relationship with Pochettino suggests that the manager would be warmly welcomed back to Tottenham Hotspur.
