Rodrigo Bentancur talks about not expecting a January transfer to Tottenham

By Eddie Razo -

Rodrigo Bentancur is one of the two players to come over from Juventus last month to help improve Tottenham Hotspur as they fight for a top-four spot next season. However, the Uruguayan midfielder stated that leaving the Serie A club wasn’t part of his plans heading into January.

Bentancur moved to Spurs during the dying hours of last month’s window, signing a four-and-half-year contract with the club following a transfer for around £15.8-million. In an interview with Sky Sport Italia (via Evening Standard), he offered some insight into the move.

“I’m doing quite well, but I still have a lot to do,” he said. “I didn’t expect to move in January, I found out in the national team, and I was very surprised and happy.”

“Personal goal? To improve every day, to give my best, and to help my teammates to get this team into the top four, into the Champions League.”

The 24-year-old is currently injured after hobbling off at half-time during this week’s loss at Burnley. Furthermore, there are worries Bentancur could miss up to three weeks of action with an ankle problem.

Heading into the future, Spurs are hopeful that the former Juventus midfielder can be a pillar at the position after striking out on Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele, two players who came in with a lot of expectations and have now left.
