Right-Back Target Is “a potent attacking weapon” Shrewd Business But …On One Condition [opinion]

By Joe Fish -

Tottenham are reportedly back in the hunt for Paris Saint-Germain right-back Thomas Meunier after his move to Borussia Dortmund fell through.

Le 10 Sport reports that Meunier had been poised to join Dortmund as a free agent when his contract with PSG expires at the end of the season.

But Dortmund director Michael Zorc has now told the French outlet that the Coronavirus crisis is going to restrict their upcoming transfer activity.

If Meunier is back on the market for nothing then I wouldn’t be opposed to signing the Belgian. He is a potent attacking weapon with 13 goals and 21 assists in 128 appearances for PSG, so would be well-suited to the advanced right-back role that Serge Aurier has flirted with being good at this season.

But I’d only sign him on one condition – that we sign another right-back too.

We need a clean slate at right-back, with Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters out and one or two in. If it is only one in, Japhet Tanganga could provide the cover, but the one would have to be somebody we can rely upon week in, week out, and I don’t have the faith in 28-year-old Meunier to be that guy.

Exports from PSG are hit-and-miss – is that because they were only ever there for the money and don’t have the hunger to go and prove themselves elsewhere? Maybe, and that is a doubt hanging over Meunier, for me.

A bargain worth pursuing but I’d want an insurance policy too.
