Report: Tottenham growing frustrated with Ajax over bids for £16M rated winger

By Eddie Razo -

Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn wants out of the north London club as he searches for more playing time ahead of the FIFA World Cup and wants to arrive in top form for the Netherlands international.

Ajax is the prime club expressing interest in the 24-year-old, but the Dutch giants have yet to put forth an offer that suits Spurs to allow them to green-light the deal.

Furthermore, Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge reports that the north London club is growing frustrated with Ajax with the bis that they’re putting forth for Bergwijn. Tottenham and Ajax remain miles apart with their respective valuations of Bergwijn.

Transfermarkt puts Bergwijn’s value at £16-million, but it seems Spurs want to get closer to the transfer fee they originally paid PSV in 2020, which was €30-million. This past season, the Netherlands international made 32 appearances for Spurs, scoring four goals and registering two assists.

It will be interesting to see whether Ajax can meet the asking demands by Spurs for a player who wants out this summer.

Exactly correct. it doesn’t matter what any of us or Levy think he’s worth. The market will dictate that. Levy can hold out, which he usually does and then we are stuck with players who aren’t good enough or don’t want to be here. Levy needs to learn to read the market, that’s it.

You’re spot on he’s just not good enough if we want to win titles. Stevie Burgers market value was actually 32 million when we bought him. He’s steadily dropped in value failing to justify any price at all.. Vincent Jansen we bought for 20 million.. His market value was 12 million.. We sold him for 8 million.. He’s now worth 2 million.. Stay clear from those Dutch players I reckon.. Aside from Matt de Ligt because he’s class.

Citeh should win it with Pep sooner than the chopping and changing mess at PSG. They sacked Tuchel for not winning it too and six months later he wins it with Chavski, you couldn’t make it up… Their owners are idiots. Well, perhaps not idiots as such but it’s a money laundering operation much like the Liv golf series. Fit and proper persons eh?

The reported fee (if we’ve actually paid that yet) for him was too high, I thought it at the time. He’s two years older and has never cemented a place in our forward line, even got really ahead of our other bench warmer Moura, and even less so since Kulusevski arrived.

When he’s come off the bench he’s done well here and there but he’s just not at the level that the top clubs want to bring in. Once those wealthier clubs aren’t interested then the values just aren’t as high, this is the reality of a market place, it’s all about demand. Your perception of him is what it is, but nobody else, including the transfer market, agrees…

Market value is always pounds.. But we sometimes buy in Euros.. Never dollars though is it… The maths becomes too difficult… With players like Stevie Burgers we might as well deal with bottle caps.

Just a small request Eddie: can we stick to either Euros or Pounds when making a value based comparison?

Yup. Compare PSG to City, who also have yet to win the CL but for some reason continue to employ Pep.

Levy should be handed his notice for running the football side so poorly, and especially since the stadium build began. He’s only been interested in that because non footballing related business is all he cares about. Not very different from most people that invest in the football industry. However, these people need to understand the nature of the industry they are in.

You just don’t get to be the eighth richest club in the world while at the same time winning one minor trophy in 23 years, without uncomfortable questions about your motives…

Not that it matters but Stevie is playing for Holland now after getting little game time for us. If anything he’ll be fresher if he doesn’t play. Van Gaal just trying to cause us more problems and get Ajax a better deal.

Bergwijn’s market value will change if he scores 5 goals in 10 consecutive games. I agree his chances of playing consecutive games for Spurs is slim. However; to a certain extent he has failed to do what Kulusevski has done by scoring and creating goals when he has been given a chance in a Spurs shirt.

When he plays for Holland he scores for fun. Mmm. Perhaps this isn’t an ‘injustice’ but a case of a player listening to his agent and attempting to force a move.

Sorry; Spurs simply should not roll over; despite whatever ‘transfermarket’ estimate Stevie’s value to be. Bergwijn is better than all the English strikers I mentioned in a previous post and we shouldn’t sell him for less than we payed because Ajax and Stevie’s agent are attempting to force the issue.

If Stevie wants the move that badly he should ask for a wage reduction at his next club so Spurs can get their money back.

Yep, levy sees players as ‘ shares’ and ‘ stocks’ when he sells shares he wants a profit….or at least never loses any money on his investments. Nothing to do about players ability, if they have become better or not, lost value etc…I can’t imagine what levy will do with ndombele. No one on earth will pay what we spent on him.

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t Van Gaal the bloke that twice agreed to coach Spurs only to blow us off for Utd and somewhere else?

Who cares what Van Gaal says? Stevie can want whatever he wants. Facts is he signed a contract with Spurs. We need depth.

Have to disagree even more strongly I’m afraid Kid…. Bergwjns market value is a little over 16 million according to transfermarkt.. You are almost doubling his value.
The reason he doesn’t play very much is because he doesn’t produce the goods.. 25 games this season he bags 3 goals and 1 assist.. 2 of those goals were in 2 minutes against Leicester. The rest of the time he has done nothing. His previous seasons have been similar. He’s clearly a fringe player already and we are looking to improve.. He’s not happy, he doesn’t want to stay and fight for his place, the manager doesn’t want him.. Get rid all day.

I’ll give you there is a decent footballer in there. At a point I thought potential RWB as it was nearly his role under Jose.
But if I was the lad I’d be feeling I’m not really wanted, as Jose said he wasn’t ever his pick, or game time last season. Add to that he wants to play which I commend the lad on.
All that being said if it’s time to move on it’s better to get it done. It seems to be a little messy and yes Ajax might be lowballing a bit but it’s time a little trim isn’t to big of a loss.

As much as I did back flips for his goals at Leicester (I swear I saw the 2nd drift by the far post) at the back of my mind is always Livershite it was like torture that night and it sums Stevie up for me more than Leicester.

Lack of game time is because he’s 5th choice up front and Conte usually subs the 2 wingbacks who run the most and then either Kulu or a center mid. With 5 subs he’ll play more. Has Stevie actually said he’s unhappy or is this his agent or just made up?

Good idea keep an unhappy player getting very little game time ..cannot see his value increasing in theses circumstances..but hey let’s keep him on our books til the end of his contract ..that should attract more players to Spurs ..

Reality is that there are only around 10 or so teams in the world now that can pay north of 20m for any player and if none of these teams want a player that’s that. Big 6, Newcastle, Madrid, PSG, Bayern. Maybe Juve. Barca and Everton are sellers now. No Russia or China bids. So unless one of these teams want a player, it’s take it or leave it from the Ajax and Villareals of the world.

Stevie is 5th choice in Conte’s front 3. Maybe 6th now behind Perisic. He’ll play this season in a packed schedule. Not so much once a week. I haven’t read anywhere that Conte doesn’t rate him, only that some internet football experts don’t. We need depth. Selling him for less than 20m makes no sense as we won’t replace him with anyone better for twice that amount. Facts.

I strongly disagree with both of you regarding Stevie B’s quality. Worth noting that Tammy Abraham led the line for England last night. Jarrod Bowen played alongside him. Their rivals for these starting places, in Kane’s absence, are Ollie fecking Watkins and Calvert Lewin.

Stevie B is easily worth 25 million in the current transfer market. If he starts games and plays regularly he will get double figures in goals. Spurs have not got the best out of this player but that does not mean he is not good enough. It means he has been a victim of circumstances, badly managed and has not progressed as he should have.

Ajax are low balling Spurs; probably because we took Eriksen and Super Jan for relative peanuts.

Good post. As close to my view on this matter as it is possible to get. I have no time for Levy & ENIC’s methods but selling off players for less than they are worth is never a good strategy.

Bergwijn signed a contract and until an acceptable offer is received he should give Spurs everything he has got. The majority of supporters understand his struggles at the club and have sympathy. If he tries to force the issue that is on him.

I despise the agents of these players as much as ENIC and Levy tbh. They all lack integrity but excel in selfishness and greed. The players and supporters are all led astray by the conflicting sides of these disputes.

It’s clear Bergy does not fit in Conte’s plans, the player is of course disillusioned so sell , now the fun begins because of Levy not wanting to lose on the deal, but Levy has to realise you cannot keep players who want out, that has been a problem throughout his tenure.

Isn’t that known as being hoist by your own petard. It sounds painful, one can only hope. Any club chairman who has had the pleasure of negotiating transfers with Levy over the past twenty years is unlikely to have fond memories of that experience.

Bergy is a decent player, in spite of harsh criticism from some members of the fan base. He has scored 5 goals in his last 5 games for Holland and (despite very little usage, he still scored 3 goals in the equivalent of 3 full games under Conte). Ajax need to put up or shut up. We should accept nothing less than £25 million for the boy.

Deja vu all over again.Levy has never learned from all the mistakes he has made by meddling in the club’s transfer policy. So here we are set to retain another failure because Levy wants top dollar for a non starter.

As the window progresses this problem will hamstring Paratici’s attempt to offload the deadwood ,which in turn will impact Conte getting his preferred choices in place. It will be very interesting to see just how much of the 150M ‘warchest’ actually gets spent, because so far we only have frees incoming. It does make you wonder how much truth there is in the Richarlison rumours.

That’s the problem we find ourselves in because of all the poor signings over the years. Levy trying to save money is going to cost him a lot more than he saved.

The problem Paratici is going to have is moving on all the spreadsheet misfits Levy has lumbered us with. The added problem being that Levy will want over the odds for players that have done nothing for two years and have aged two years…

There was very little demand for Stevie B when we thought it was a good idea to splash out what we did, when a proven striker in his early 30’s would have been far more useful with Kane out at the time. Another example of the incoherent mess of a transfer ‘policy’ in place at the club…
