Tottenham is closing in on making Nuno Espirito Santo their next manager and they will hold face-to-face talks with him in London today, The Athletic reports.
Spurs have been searching for a new manager since April when they sacked Jose Mourinho.
They have missed out on the likes of Antonio Conte and Paulo Fonseca, but they will now get a manager that did some good work while in the hot seat at Wolves.
The report says the new Tottenham director of football, Fabio Paratici arrived in London yesterday and will lead talks with the Portuguese boss, who came into town today.
While they have struggled to appoint a host of other targets, they are confident that they can make Santo their next boss.
It says they have already held discussions with him and talks are at an advanced stage.
Spurs start preseason on the 5th of July and the Lilywhites are confident that they will have named him as their next manager before then and he will take charge of the first training sessions.
Santo didn’t win a trophy in the Premier League with Wolves, but he helped them get promoted from the championship and established them as one of the hardest clubs to play again.
when i heard it was Nuno i didnt know how to respond, not the best but the best we could get, given him a 2 year deal shows they dont have loads of faith in him, however he did well at wolves first couple of seasons so we may get a surprise. This is what we have and we have to get behind him and the team to make the best of it. As for top 4 well not sure that will happen but got to finish above spammers and gooners or we will be laughing stock of London.
Agreed on all fronts. At the moment we are not a top 4/5 club. That can change in 2 transfer windows so we are playing the waiting game……again! Just like Liverpool when Klopp took over, we need an overhaul of playing personnel and in 3 years we should not have many of last year’s First XI-XV still with us. Apart from our 2 gems, who deserve trophies, the rest can walk out of the door. Rodon and Reggie have potential but then I am scratching my head. We are not run in a manner that allows seamless transitions and just because we have good training facilities (most clubs do) and a shiny unbranded stadium means very little.
Agree 100% !! Levy has dodged the bullet for so many years, but now theres no one else for him to make the scapegoat.
Glad this saga is over. Actually I don’t understand why so many people consider Nuno not good enough for us. For what Spurs have become today he certainly is good enough. Get used to the fact that we are no longer en elite club.Enic’s woeful performance in the transfer market over the past few years has put paid to our top 4 status- or even top 6! I also remember in his first two seasons in the PL , Nuno getting lots of praise from both pundits and fans alike. I actually think he will do a good job. And I for one will get behind him.But his success depends how much support he has in the transfer market from Enic. Yes Levy has shown some intent by hiring Paratici, but whther he will really alow him free rein in footbnall matter remains to be seen. We will see.
Does reek of ‘Poor Man’s Poch’ but at this stage what can we do but get behind him.
Better than Sherwood at least
So it’s done. Guess that’s me checking out for any more games for a while. Nuno FFS !!!
Nuno is our level, and Enic FC is Nunos level. Face Facts.
Too late Pat.
Noooooooo get dyche give him good players or just keep mason. Such a bad appointment
Jam. Never
F#$k you Clem Fandangoooooooooooo😃
Ps. I agree.
Mourinho with no trophys or box office appeal . Wolves didn’t think he was the man for them to go forward so why the $@%# would he be for ENIC fc?? The season won’t get off the ground anyway probably so no matter. The fans will have to vent online….
What an absolute shower of time wastes.
There were a reported 15 million reasons a season Mourinho came and he was sold a pack of lies. This was inferred by himself in a recent interview. No top class manager would come to Spurs with our present squad and no real promise of substantial investment. Nuno is about the best we can expect. I am far from happy at the fall from grace caused by Levy, but we are where we are. I stated at the time Mourinho would not work at Spurs. I knew he wouldn’t get backed and not even a made up diety would make Sissoko et al in to players! Levy has no idea about football matters. He seems to forget that other teams do want to win trophies so spend large on wages and transfer fees. Thinking Mourinho could turn a finished squad into winners was bizarre, but it is precisely what happened. His first signing was Bergwijn, a player who can’t get in to a bang average Dutch team. Pitiful.
Amen.
Our DNA amounts to whatever suits Levy at the time. He flip flops all over the place depending how much it costs…
You say that but Mourinho happened didn’t it?
We could have hired Nuno over 2 months ago – what a pallava!
The No No’s need to get realistic. This IS as good as it gets. Get used to it and get behind the manager.
IF the (so far) rumour’s are true, I guess I’ll have to get on board with Nono but oh how I wish it’s all nonsense like most of the other press untruths have been.
I’ll be interested to know what all the anti-Mourinho brigade will make of it, seeing as he’s seemingly a bit of a ‘José lite’
I like Pottertino, but imagine trying to get Aurier, Dier, Sanchez, Winks, Bergwijn and Sissoko to play attractive football. It would be a disaster. For Potter we need proper players, we don’t have them and we’ll find it hard to get them in transfers. Brighton only just stayed above the relegation zone. Nuno is similar to Mourinho in style, I agree, more workmanlike than artist and it would be interesting to see how he can deal with our deadwood without setting fire to everything. Getting 90 minute tunes out of Ndom and Lo Celso is also a conundrum for any manager to solve. That is the case for any manager though! I doubt any appointment will work out perfectly with Levy as CEO lying about £200m losses so fans’ expectations are lowered, but we need a manager who knows the Prem, can manage on limited resources and deal with Levy’s lies.
Agreed. Under the circumstances it would be a good appointment. Conte and Poch were dreamland stuff, never going to happen for a whole host of reasons. I would prefer Nuno over Fonseca and Gattuso, who both turned my stomach, and so we end up in the middle.
I think Nuno is getting disrespected. He’s pragmatic, but what’s wrong with that? He works with what he’s got, and his players love him. Watch interviews with Coady. He smashed the Championship, and came 7th twice, with an FA Cup semi and then a Europa semi. With Wolves. Yes, last season was poor but he lost arguably his 2 best players in Jota and Jimenez, not to mention Doherty, and Johnny and Boly to lengthy injuries, and Moutinho finally went over the hill, and the replacements weren’t good enough. Things went to shit in Poch’s final season but many clamoured for him back. There is such thing as context. Bear in mind we appointed Poch after one season at Southampton after coming 8th. Both Wolves’ 7ths were with more points. The process has been muddled but if we are to believe that ultimately our new DoF got his man, a guy he considered at Juve, then this works for me.
I think fans will get behind Nuno……if it does go south then Levy will be the one who gets it both barrels.
Nuno is a good tactical coach, knows how to set up against good teams, but that can be a tad boring. If it wins games though who will care? Wolves fans and players loved him but he had a good link with Mendes who got him a few gems. When you are successful though and in Wolves’ world they were a success, it easy for all to share the love. This is a step up, but Nuno has earned that. Not like Fwankie Lamps at the Bridge.
Paritici has to earn his corn and Levy has to give him the money………and that’s when we hit a brick wall because Paratici will not get big money and then we have to see who Paritici can bring in with the lure of Euro Conference football and some artisan scotch eggs in our training facility.
I thought Nuno was a good shout when Poch’s time was ending. Will see if this can work, unless we are waiting on one of the Euro bunch.
Levy will stand next to Nuno and insist that he was “always his first choice” and will also claim that all of the stories in the press linking us to every manager in the world were all false.
And he’ll say it with a straight face as well.
No no Santo! Final straw me…Yesterday’s man, for yesterday’s football. Negative football at Valencia; counter attack at Wolves whats the difference to Mourinho? Leyv’s Job brief: Attactive football; improve defence; develope youth; an eye for talent Graham Potter is doing that day-in, day-out, with little money at Brighton -on the bright side, No No Santo will sadly, be gone by Xmas when we start this scenario all over again
is this worth the season ticket money ? i hope so for all those supporters who have paid but i dont think so there could be trouble ahead Enic out
Losing Jota and Jimenez hurt them. Relying on an 18 year old was never going to work.
One reason was he did lose his top scorer to injury, and at Valencia and Porto he played better football
Well, again DL shows he’s either a hypocrite or incapable. I also have nothing against Nuno. My brother in law is a Wolves fan and was gutted when he left. However, this is not getting back to our DNA. This is recruiting a manager once all of your top choices have turned you down.
Went from euphoria of England beating Germany in knock out competition stage for the first time in 55 years to this…..I’ve nothing against Nuno (in fact don’t know much about him TBH) Levy you a just a complete plum! if only you backed Poch three seasons ago instead of your in house cheese factory/brewery/skywalk/glasstunnell we wouldn’t be in this mess.
There was only one team scored fewer goals than Wolves last season. That was relegated West Brom. Welcome to the new Mourinho, no trophies and no attacking football. Bye bye Harry! FFS.
Well he matches my ‘I’ll settle for anyone now’ criteria. If he is a DNA match remains to be seen. Exciting isn’t it.
Yawn.
