Harry Kane vs Germany: Analysis

By The Boy -

If we look at the attacking overview of the game as a whole, which may be useful for those who began drinking a little early yesterday, there was very little between the two sides at all. If anything, the game’s urgency increased somewhat in the second half.

Harry Kane’s recurring problem with service has yet to be addressed, and the England captain managed just the one shot on goal and his goal.

I understand that strikers are greedy by nature, but if Raheem Sterling doesn’t start sharing the wealth, then England could well come unstuck.

Total actions / successful 55%

Kane drew criticism from some fans online after last’s night’s victory, but in truth, the man just needed the ball – as he ably demonstrated – and his total actions / successful tally was 55%, which is better than his current mean average of 47.1%.

Beyond the goal, Kane made 1 progressive run and had 2 touched in the German penalty area.

This was an emotionally charged game, but Southgate is going to need to embark on a significant tactical shake-up if England to achieve more.

He has 3 goals that were all laid on a plate with one touch finishes. He has had these goals set up by players doing what he should be doing. Walker, Phillips, Kane, Saka, Shaw and Grealish have all been involved in his goals. They have all moved the ball quickly. For me, Sterling is all about himself. If he was dancing through players and mesmerising defences I would say fair play. He doesn’t. He dribbles in to dead ends and hasn’t looked like he can put another player through.

As for our attacking players, out and out attackers, we only have 3. As Kane is being isolated by Southgate’s tactics you can hardly blame him. Rice and Phillips are primarily stoppers. Everyone should be able to join in, they are quality footballers, but we are there to win 1-0. Anything more and it’s a bonus.

Its not “hate” its stating a fact. Sterling very very rarely passes to Kane and opts to run into the channel without crossing.

you are wrong though as ALL of sterlings goals have actually come when he has passed early and moved without the ball or sinply not touched it until the last moment. When given the ball to run with we waste opportunities way too much.

The stats also ignore the fact that every where Kane went he took 2 defenders. This opened loads of space England wasted. Even Sterlings goal the defenders tracked Kane leaving sterling half a 6yrd box. The number of crosses that didnt happen was untrue too. You could see the kane movement then the cross got checked. I was getting wound up. Almost as much as I do with the rubbish that “Kane gets found out at international level” only one play in Englands top 15 goal scorers has a better goals to game ratio (Nat Lofthouse).

Haha now we have a conspiracy theory too! “Sterling at war with Kane” – my goodness what have you people had for breakfast?
I think all this Sterling hate is because he allegedly turned down down a move to Spurs in a possible Kane money plus player swap deal. Only I’m not seeing this hate for him on any other club forums?

He may be a bit selfish but he’s not alone amongst attacking players in that. 3 goals in 4 matches at the highest level says he perhaps has a right to be selfish at the moment.
If he’s selfish and scores the winner in the final will you still be moaning?

Can’t argue with 3 goals in 4 games can you? No wonder the Aussies call us “whinging poms”, with a player on course for golden boot in a top class tournament, any other nation would be celebrating that but not some English folks who seem to make a national pastime of knocking the national team, manager and top even the top scoring players. Bizarre.
After the mess Kane made of that chance that fell to his feet with an open goal I don’t blame Sterling for going it alone!

Amazing result and the boys did well, but we only got our goals after Grealish came on and he was instrumental for both.. Not starting Grealish is madness. And persistent with Sterling who can’t shoot well, passes back alot, and is a greedy bleeder, Raheem isn’t even a striker.

The Kane haters are devoid of anything that resembles a footballing brain. One such told me he’s the most over hyped over rated England CF ever.

I pointed out he’s 28 currently 6th in England’s all time goal scorers, importantly above Shearer with possibly 2 world cups and at least another Euro’s in him. Didn’t bother mentioning the PL golden boots.

Put simply there’s no educating or debating stupid.

With Rice and Phillips as defensive midfielders we had no link up creativity in the middle and Kane was just chasing shadows. He drops deep with Spurs but clearly Southgate has told him to stay up front. All he is doing is chasing the ball as it it is passed across the opponents back line. Grealish is the only player who brings Kane into the game. When he came on Kane became more effective. I thought McGuire added some forward momentum and I like the way he pushes forward with the ball. I am so bored with this tippy tappy passing across the back line and in most of the game Shaw kept passing the ball backwards to our own goal. It was a great result yesterday but we need much more attacking movement in the midfield if we are to stand a chance of winning this competition.

I have to wholeheartedly agree with the Sterling/Kane verdict. Sterling is so selfish. He ran down blind alley after blind alley, got tackled for taking too many touches on too many occasions and only when he actually passed to Kane did England score. He has had effectively 3 tap ins, which granted he needs to be in a position to score, but 2 of those were central positions vacated by Kane’s movement to drag central defenders away (Croatia and last night).

Southgate has the attack geared to support Sterling, not Kane, if people can’t see that the local Specsavers is open now. As Kane is so heavily marked he is a decoy in many respects. The pundits are wondering about his movement, but Southgate has stifled that in his tactics. If Kane knew passes would be coming he would make the runs. When Poland play they play to Lewandowski’s strengths. why England can’t put crosses in to the box and get the ball to Kane’s feet is beyond me.

Pep took the plunge and reaped the benefits of ditching Sterling last season, he slows play too much when 2 touches will do. He is a good player, but I wouldn’t have him in the world class bracket. Grealish, Mount, Sancho and Foden can all score and assist. Now, you cannot accommodate all of them, but to not start with at least 2 is bizarre. I like Saka, but he isn’t better than the other 4. He offers a defensive option and it looks like Southgate is centered around not conceding. I have no issue with that, defences win trophies, but if he can’t see that involving Kane will only benefit the team we might come up short.

We have a pretty easy ride to the final. If we don’t get to the final Southgate should get the boot, but then again, we might end up with him and his paint by numbers tactical colouring book.

Sterling has been playing like Moura. Sure he gets goals here and there, but his decision making is terrible, and runs like a headless chicken into a wall of defenders.

There could be something to that. I feel it’s more likely that Sterling is somewhat one-dimensional and fails to recognise that bringing kane into play will more than likely provide himself with more opportunities.

Kane is a very clever player and certainly not greedy. He has a better chance of opening up a defends than most in that attacking line-up. He’s not just about scoring goals.

He probably wants to be the hero and so far, it’s worked. Kane’s been thrashed by most fans, while Sterling is praised to the skies. Their attacking “cooperation” is a one-way street, which must be frustrating as hell. Might have something to do with the rumours about Kane to City (some people have suggested – stupidly – in a player swap with Sterling himself)?

If Sterling ever bothered to pass to the best striker in the Premier League, who knows what could happen? Oh wait, we do know – just look what happens when Grealish plays and actually wants to pass to Kane.

I don’t want to get negative on the game because it was great beating the Germans however, again it was infuriating watching Sterling not passing to Kane. It’s starting to feel weird, deliberate.
