Pundit tips revived Tottenham man to earn a new deal

By Bruce Grove -

One of the reinvigorated players at Spurs this season has been Serge Aurier.

The Ivorian looked to be on his way out of Tottenham in the summer when the club signed Matt Doherty.

There were even rumours of the club making him available for transfer, but he remained and has fought for his place.

Spurs quality in depth means that Jose Mourinho can make changes to his team and the players will still deliver fine performances for the club.

Aurier and Doherty have been playing for the club and they have both been impressing.

But after starting the tough games against the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal, it seems that Aurier has earned his place back as a favourite of Mourinho.

His fine form means that the club will start looking to hand him a new deal, and Paul Robinson thinks that might happen within the next few months.

He said that he has changed his opinion about Aurier before backing the defender to earn a new deal before January ends.

He told Football Insider: “I criticised him last year and at the time I think rightly so.

“However, this season he has been outstanding. To come in and perform on the level he has after the signing of Doherty shows great attitude and application. He has taken it as a challenge and last night again he was outstanding. He deserves a lot of credit.

“It is unlike Tottenham to let a player that they want to keep get into the final 18 months of their contract without offering them a new deal.

“But I think slowly Aurier is winning the manager over with his performances.

“He was close to leaving in the summer but I think it is now one to watch.

“If they want to keep him he will be offered a new deal over the festive period, before the end of January. If not we will likely see him leave next summer to raise some much-needed funds.”
