Pundit suggests that Spurs shouldn’t have brought in new signing immediately

By Bruce Grove -

Kevin Phillips suggests that Tottenham should have allowed Joe Rodon to remain on loan at Swansea City instead of bringing him straight into the club after signing the defender yesterday.

This is because the Welshman may not get as much game time at Tottenham reckons Phillips.

Spurs signed Rodon late in the transfer window as they needed to add a new defender to their team.

After opening talks on the final day of the international transfer window, the Lilywhites maintained contact over the 22-year-old.

After several rejected bids, both teams reached an agreement believed to be around £15million including £4m of add-ons.

He will become Spurs’ fourth senior centre-back for this season, but Phillips believes that he will struggle to play for the club and he instead should have been allowed to remain with Swansea until at least January so he can get more game time and develop further.

Asked by Football Insider whether he expected Rodon to be loaned back to Swansea immediately, Phillips said: “Yes, definitely.

“For me I think Tottenham have made some good signings. I know that area (centre-back) is obviously what has been identified to strengthen.

“Can he go and make an impact straight away? It’s a big ask.

“Common sense would probably suggest bring the player in and loan him straight back to give him more experience.

“At the start of next season or maybe in January when he’s played a few more games then maybe bring him back and have a look at him.

“I think the obvious one is secure the player first and then send him back out on loan and let him develop as a player.

“All of sudden you have a brilliant player on your hands who doubles in money or trebles in money and also performs for your team for the next four, five, six, seven years.”

Disagree. Patently.

Tanganga is still struggling on the physio table, and all 4 of Dier, Alderweireld, Sanchez, and Davies are international starters who could come back injured at any time.

Additionally, Spurs will implement 3 backs at times.

Not only will Rodon get match time, he will be necessary for good rotation.

I’m convinced he’ll get game time, although young he’s highly rated & hopefully he’ll prove himself in training to warrant it.
& to all those that have moaned about Dier & Sanchez, aren’t you now more than pleased THFC have signed a player to possibly replace either of them?

Think there was NO way José would’ve become THFC manager without the assurance he’d be backed, (albeit in a ‘restricted’ finacial market) AND Mr. Levy knew he couldn’t/it would be pointless to appoint him (on such huge wages) without giving him what he wanted.

Rob Holding??? You’re taking the piss! I’d rather have Michael Holding! Even allowing for the unenviable fact that he is a Gooner, our new boy Rodon surely has a considerable amount more potential than Rob Holding.

These upcoming Europa League group matches would have been perfect for the boy, but unfortunately he is not eligible as the squads have already been submitted.

I must admit to warming to Mourinho.I had my doubts like a lot of us,but he seems a lot more measured in his approach to the job.
I don’t know what he said to Levy about backing him in the transfer window, but it has worked wonders. Our best window in terms of incomings for a number of seasons and bodes well for this campaign.
He was the broom to sweep clean.

I could see him playing if he proves himself as I don’t completely trust Dier or Sanchez. He might be our Rob Holding.
I see the new PPV kicks in this afternoon. It will be interesting to learn if this is a loser for BT and Sky particularly for those who have already paid their subscription. Before this week there were 4 matches scheduled for today and 6 matches for tomorrow with those two companies. That’s now halved basically.
I won’t pay the extra.

Agreed, when self professed expert Gary Neville became a football manager he became a laughing stock. Mou’s opinion or one of these untested jokers, hmm not a difficult choice.

Of course Skriniar would have been an instant 1st teamer but I think there is plenty of game time for him in the Europa league group stages. He’s not a kid and the level is as easily high in the C-ship as it is in the EL group stages. He can also play in the early cup rounds and be available should we have a CB emergency. Obviously Mou and our Welsh boys and scout rate him very highly as an international too, that’s good enough for me.

Who gives a crap what some self-opinionated, rent-a-mouth, ex-pro, thinks. They are a ‘dime-a-dozen’ these pundits, like Collymore, Merson, Nicholas, Cascarino, etc, mostly under-achieving nonentities, full of crap. None of them have ever won anything as managers and a lot of them, like Collymore, Cascarino, etc, were career journeymen who never won anything as players either.

If the most successful manager of this generation, Mourinho, wants to keep and assimilate Rodon into the squad, which I fully agree with by the way, then that is the only opinion that counts. What would he learn from staying at Swansea? Absolutely nothing! Here he can train and learn up against the likes of Kane, Son and Bale, in a world class training facility, under the tutelage of a world class manager.

I agree with this, could play him in the Mickey Mouse Cup but the further you get in that the pressure builds. Just can’t see Jose using him much yet. They obviously wanted him in with Jan and Foyth outgoing to provide cover but is it right for the boy? Philips makes a fair point…
