Pundit says Spurs reliance on hotshot is sad

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham is top of the Premier League table and they are also in good shape in other competitions.

It has been a long time since they have won a trophy and their fans are desperate for the wait to end soon.

Their fine start to this campaign makes that a possibility, and their results have been helped by the form of their players.

Two men that stand out for the team are Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, with both players scoring a majority of the Tottenham goals.

Son, in particular, has been a standout performer for the club this season.

Noel Whelan has enjoyed watching the South Korean play for Tottenham, but he says that Jose Mourinho is being forced to rely on him.

He claims that the Portuguese manager would like to rest him, but he is being forced to play him because other players are not reliable and that is sad.

“You’ve got Son who’s leading the line, who is that one player out there that he can’t do without,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“I’m pretty sure that he would love to put him on the bench but I’m not sure that he trusts his players enough to do that. That’s pretty much what he said in his press conference.

“That’s sad, that’s so sad for the rest of the players have been given an opportunity.”

If you’re now questioning a player you signed six months ago then you begin to understand why you had the issues you did at Utd. Lindeloff etc, all signings Jose made that less than a year later he wanted to replace. Not many board rooms will put up with such a blatant waste of resources…

A draw against Spurs at home is the best result he has had in the PL this season, after that another draw against 8th place Shampton.

I am questioning Jose’s judgement, why did you sign LoCelso?

People might have said Rodgers or Ancelotti before the season kicked off but both are struggling to put together two half decent results right now.

Ancelotti arguably has almost as strong a squad as Spurs at his disposal too, no excuses there.

Jose doesn’t suit him and Gio doesn’t suit Jose. The manager had been here a few months before making his deal permanent. If he needs to get him it if the club already then you have to question the judgement of the manager…

Werner 4 Abraham 3 they have more problems with their starting strikers than back up. Son 9 Kane 7 goals. They have scored one more goal than us,I’ll give you that and yes can’t stand Frank or Chelski.

You seem to be anti Chelsea I get that but instead of selectively picking on isolated players I was simply looking at Chelseas overall attacking options.

Chelsea have Giroud who has struggled for goals in the PL since signing for them,he has only scored 13 in 63 games.

When we have so little possession it’s important when you have it not to keep giving it away like LoCelso did (18 times) against LASK. I had high hopes for him but he has been such a disappointment. He might still get some subsitution appearences this season but we might be better cashing in come January. The work off the ball can mean putting yourself about always in a position to receive or deliver the killer pass, for me he struggles on all fronts, either as some have suggested a lack of form ,previously down to injuries or fitness.Dele partnered N’Dombele to a better effect in the previous EL game than LoCelso did on Thursday night albeit against weaker opposition in Ludogorets,he even worked harder on and off the ball.

It’s true, whoever slags Poch off for not winning a title conveniently have a blind spot to the budgets of the managers that do. It’s almost comedic…. 😂

F*ck Jose and his negative sh*t, he should take leaf out of Klopp’s book. Oh, but that doesn’t win titles does it? 🤔 😂

Lampard has been backed to the hilt, that’s why he’s doing well.

I don’t see LoCelso as lazy whatsoever he has an excellent work rate. It’s just that Jose wants the majority of work to be done without the ball. Players like LoCelso want to be busy with the ball. How can he do that when the team has 25% possession stats?

This is why I have such a deep aversion to Jose’s tactics. Ball players don’t fit in, everything is brought down to being purely attritional.

When teams like Liverpool and Bayern blow teams away and win titles the opposite way, it makes me hate it even more. Especially as a Spurs fan…

True, but hardly anyone plays with two up front anymore DD. Hence the need for less specialist strikers, goal scoring players who can play wide or in the 10 etc are preferred.

Bale has been a let down for me. VDV came from Real in the latter stages of his career, but for a player that lacked pace he ripped the Premiership a new one. The man oozed class, albeit for 70 minutes per game, but every one of the minutes was a joy to behold. That is what Bale should be doing. The man has won everything in club football worth winning, more than once, and has played against and trained with the best on offer. Yet, he can’t turn out a decent performance against Austria’s number 2! I wasn’t expecting the tornado that left us, but the half hearted zephyr has not impressed me at all. Bale may feel wanted on the training ground, but fans, no matter if it is 62000 or a handful in a stadium will not stand for it. More needed. It is not as though he is inspiring his immediate challengers for the wide berth.
Moura and Bergwijn are £60m between them and we get half a tune out of both at best. That is disappointing. Poor Son is next in line, after Kane, to be flogged to death.

I don’t think clubs will have ‘long term’ managers in quite the same way anymore, it’s much more like the Continental model. Levy has already said this himself.

Personally I don’t agree with that, if someone is going a good job over several seasons then the only sane thing to do is to back them and keep them in place to try and win something…

LC yes perhaps he is the darling of the media and given greater financial clout which he has seemingly used to good effect I am simply praising FL because as good a player he was on the pitch I actually think he is becoming a good manager and taking Chelsea to the next level.

Poch gets hammered for not winning anything but Frank gets praised?Getting to an FA cup final is not as hard as a CL final. He has just had an open cheque book and spent £230m . He lost two cup finals last year,it’s a bit early for claiming Frank is one of the best if we judge managers on trophies like we do with Jose then Arteta has won more than Frank. Frank is the English media darling and not a bad word is spoken about him. Chelsea won nothing last season and had the worst defensive record in 22 seasons,if his name wasn’t Lampard i am convinced like (Sari & Conte ) who did win titles & cups ,he would have been sacked.Chelsea are sitting third but have not beaten a top ten side this season.

We all know Jose only wants players he can trust that are prepared to put in a shift,he doesn’t like passengers who think they can coast through a game, while you prefare LoCelso,Sissoko works harder and will always get picked in front of him. I can forgive his lazy attitude if he produced goals or assists, but as he does neither i would be up to selling in January.

Arguably currently one of the best about is managing Chelsea!!

Moura and Bergwjin would struggle to get in any side in the top half for me. Dunno what’s going on with Bale but I would say overall, that Jose’s lack of attacking intent is holding back a lot of the squad, apart from his starting 11.

Even then you’re relying too heavily on Kane and Son and I find his use of Lo Celso worrying. If there’s one player that always looks like he’s willing and wants the ball it’s him. Is Jose going to loan him out too?

Part of Jose’s issues at Utd were his unwillingness or inability to incorporate existing players into his system effectively. This is despite bringing in several of his own.

These days Jose can’t just clear the decks of players he doesn’t fancy and buy top quality to replace them. Owners are treating managers much more as coaches to come in and try and work with what they have, and generally a younger age group as well.

We are doing very well right now but I just don’t see Jose as a long term manager at Spurs…

The competition for the attacking places behind Kane other than Son have been relatively poor this season it’s true.

Probably the biggest downer of the season so far – how one or more of Bale, Moura, Lamela or Bergwijn can’t string a series of high quality and ideally goal scoring performances together is a bit pathetic.
