Pundit reckons Tottenham needs a faster defender amidst interest in Premier League star

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham needs faster defenders in their squad and not a defender like Wolves’ Conor Coady, according to Gabriel Agbonlahor.

We expect the Lilywhites to be busy in this transfer window and one position that continues to give them problems is their defence.

The defence gave them issues last season and Jose Mourinho complained about it even though they signed Joe Rodon.

The Lilywhites are closing in on making Nuno Espirito Santo their next manager (The Athletic) and one of his former players has been linked with a move to N17.

Football Insider reported earlier that the former Wolves manager would like to sign Conor Coady if he becomes the next man on the Tottenham bench.

Coady has developed the reputation of being a reliable and decent defender since he helped Wolves to win promotion back to the Premier League.

However, former Aston Villa attacker, Gabby Agbonlahor says he isn’t the type of defender that Tottenham needs at the moment and says they rather need a defender that is way faster and cannot be beaten for pace.

When asked if Coady can fix Spurs’ poor defence, he responded to Football Insider: “No, no, no.

“Spurs have got defenders like Conor Coady that are confident on the ball. Spurs need defenders that are rock solid as well as being confident on the ball but can’t be beaten in behind.

“For me, no, Coady is not the defender that Tottenham need.”

Coady isn’t bad, but at 28 yrs old I would pass. He’s not getting any better now… Joe Rodon is a ball playing centre back and only 23. He will get even better…Dier and Sanchez have to be 3rd and 4th choice right now. Would like to see them go too.. Toby and Joe first choice right now.

Told you before I don’t bother with or care for votes… Spurs have won European cups mate. Botchy won nothing. Strawmans argument banging on about the 3 transfer windows. Botchy was berry appy all that time, even though you weren’t… What about the 13 transfer windows previous? What about his final window. Ndom Lo Celso were club record signings and Botch targets. When he was finally given money we went backwards.

He plays 5 at the back when defending… 343 or 352 in possession. As soon as they lost possession their wing backs both dropped to make 5… He plays 3 centre backs with wing backs both sides.. Matt Docherty will be buzzing because he’ll be back on the wing… Did they really have more of the ball than us under Jose? Similar set up yet we finished 7th compared to their 13th.. Maureen usually played with one less defender.

Could have said same about Poch….Jose was a spent force who was only a force when he spent. Boring football and bad man management. I felt he should have been given the end of the season at least, but there was clearly more at play. As you say though, unless Levy plans to actually invest on the pitch, wouldnt matter who we got.

Levy sacks a manager who has won more trophies that Tottenham have won in their entire existence, for a man who managed a couple of mid table finishes and then got sacked.

I wish Nuno well, but I don’t see how this gets us back in top 4 contention – however, as we’ve been saying all along, nobody could manage that unless Levy drops 200m on the squad, so it doesn’t really matter who he appointed.

The author of this blog has been saying the same thing about Levy from 2008 or so and people continued to argue about Levy being the greatest asset of this beautiful club. People have come and gone ,changed their views but Harry has been consistent in assessment of Levy. I for one congratulate you on an awesome football blog that has made me come back everyday for all these years. I hope now more than ever that spurs supporters stick together with the anti levy movement untill this money grabbing knobhead sells up. Tottenham isnt a football club anymore. I for one was hoping the ESL went ahead as that would of atleast given our team appeal to world class football players. No matter how much we love our club, which decent footballer will want to join our club knowing that we are just a passenger team which is content just to finish in the top 10.We need around £200 mill of investment to finish in the top 4 and that’s if we keep hold of Kane.Anyway if Kane wants to leave let him go,we have lost far greater players than him over the years and still managed. He wants trophies and I accept that, but he also had the chance to win us trophies and he failed when it counted. He wants to be mentioned in the same bracket as Ronaldo and Messi, but those players on their own when their team wasnt playing well made the difference. If Kane has to go and we use that money on player including 2 years of salary then it can work out ,not buying 5 potential stars.

Yeah, because it’s gone so well since he left hasn’t it? And in the last year that wasn’t so great we still got further in Europe than in our entire history.

No signings for 3 transfer windows and a sh*t window after that that did nothing to address the issues that needed fixing. That’s what ruined things for Pochettino, Levy ruined the whole thing. There’s no argument otherwise…

He played three at the back but they played some decent stuff, with the ball more than what we saw under Jose. Based on that I would say he’s competent rather than earth shatteringly brilliant or perfect for us. Look, it was either this or Mason so beggars can’t be choosers. Under Levy…

7th 7th then 13th.. We’ll all get behind him of course but after 2 months what a massively underwhelming appointment.. I’m suprised you think wolves were decent. He played with 5 defenders in a low block, 10 men behind the ball, hitting with counter attacks. Similar style to Maureen… Lewis and Levy are going nowhere they are waiting to reap the rewards of the stadium first, judging by covid this won’t be anytime soon.

Extremely embarrassing.. Not good enough for Wolves, but good enough for the Spurs.. He plays defensive with a low block. He’s Maureen but without the trophies. Spurs dna is being Spursy under the Bald one, there is no other dna.

A bit embarrassing for the guy. Every manager and his dog linked to the job and it ends up with Nuno who was available all along lol.

Re Levys comments. Another indication of the contempt he holds for fans. Speaking of Nunos ‘success’ (?) returning to the Spurs DNA (!) embracing our youth (who?)
The fact he makes particular reference to our ‘talented group of players’ gives us everything we need to know about how this squad will change over summer.
Get your shoe shine Nuno because you’re gonna be doing some serious polishing!

100%. This whole thing has exposed Levy for what he actually is, i.e. incompetent regarding all things football related. His low profile is no coincidence, now his cover has been blown, even for those still making excuses for him.

I mean he was available with no club, always attractive to Daniel.

We know for sure that Poch, Lopetegui and Fonseca were approached.

I believe that Poch is open to a return but the timing was completely wrong. If he stays at PSG he should tick the league winner box next season and have a go at the C.L again. He wants that and so do PSG, no wonder they told Daniel to f*ck off and leave them alone… It might be that Levy would only offer a two year deal and with his record of sacking managers, nobody else decent wanted it.

Perhaps Nuno is happy to do a job for 18 months, I reckon Fonseca and Gatusso were happy to do that as well whereas Conte, Lopetegui and the better options were not.

He is preferable to Mason, but that’s a very low bar to clear.

I’m going to give him a chance, certainly. But will our board? Our summer transfer activity will be a great indicator of how he is viewed by the powers-that-be at Spurs.

Sell five/six duds and bring in four players of Nuno’s choosing? Good – I might just get a bit excited then. Keep the squad more or less the same and expect him to work wonders with perennial failures like Dier and Winks while bringing through “40M academy players”? We might as well take a year off as fans.

Anyway, I’m not forgetting this managerial search shambles anytime soon. And let us not forget that everything, everything at Tottenham Hotspur leads back to Levy, especially all the foolishness that tarnished the name of the club recently. Not Nuno, not Paratici, only Levy, and we are set up for failure, unless he changes dramatically.

Levy out.

They just had to get someone in or give the job to Mason or Chris Powell or someone. Personally think that’s where it was heading.

Another Jorge Mendes client and another short term failure I suspect. At least we won’t have the ‘serial winner’ stuff to put up with, when it means nothing at club that wins nothing. Let’s just hope he can at least get some kind of tune out of them for a bit and rise spirits a bit.

Meanwhile we have Levy and his “pwudent” mantra stamping over everyone’s hopes and dreams for another 22 years. ‘Levy Land”

Enjoy the ride folks!

I will back him, but the recruitment process was an absolute shambles – had we decided Nuno was the one, we could have sealed the deal ages ago and let him get on with it. Now he’s immediately up against it, as there’s really not much time to get players in for the start of pre-season, and some people (our current players included) will know he’s probably the 9th or 10th choice.

I suspect we won’t get many players for pre-season, so the gelling will take place in competitive games. Again. And our results will suffer. Again.

I feel a bit sorry for Nuno. He deserves a fair crack at the job and I don’t think that’s what will happen here.

So Levy’s appointed a manager who’s won nothing, who nobody else wanted, who has a very conservative approach rather than the free-flowing football ‘in our DNA’, who predominantly works with the endless stream of Jorge Mendes clients that get foisted onto the club he works at, and who has just demonstrated last season that his team becomes completely non-functional when his star striker is not available.

I foresee no problems ahead whatsoever.

Oh, and of course then Levy writes his speech for him and gets him to trot out the usual Masonesque puppeted mouthpiece dross.

No ambition. No jam. No jambition. Never.

“First of all, I’d like to welcome Nuno to the club,” said Spurs chairman Daniel Levy. “We should like to thank our supporters for all their patience throughout this process.
“I’ve spoken already about the need to revert back to our core DNA of playing attacking, entertaining football and Fabio and I believe Nuno is the man who can take our talented group of players, embrace our young players coming through and build something special.”

They finished 7th in his first two seasons and I thought they played some decent stuff under him. He seems la likeable character and seems popular with the players.

As with the Fonz, I think most fans will get behind him if he’s doing decent job, he shouldn’t be purely regarded as some kind of representation of Levy’s chaotic running of the football, it’s not his fault and he has job to do.

Give the guy a chance and keep pushing for ENIC out. COYS.

So this is what we’ve been waiting for 70+ days? Budget Mourinho?

I will back him, but from what I’ve seen of Wolves, they were quite solid and counter attacked a lot, not overly exciting. Sometimes they played nice attacking football, but not too often.

Now please, get recruiting. Sell at least some of the dross and give him players of his choosing. Otherwise, why even bother?

I’ve just got my head around the manager situation but if we start buying up bang average players that will be over priced due to being English what expectation can we truly have. If he is the level I’d rather not hinder Rodens development but there are loads of decent DC’s in serie A that would probably cost a fraction of the cost ….so let Paratici do his thing.

He’s 6.2 so pretty average for a Dc and I’ve got to say the little I’ve seen of him I never thought he was slow but the Foyth shout is a good call he’s got that loves a tackle/ block eagerness about him.

Coady can defend and organise a backline, as well as being able to play out from the back. He is better than the CBs we have. That is all that counts for me. Sell them, buy him and a Ben White type player and we are moving forward. Keep Sanchez and Dier and we might as well pack in.
When we had Jan and Tobes, Coady was not the answer, but times have changed……..drastically.
