Pundit backs 21-year-old Spurs man to start today against Chelsea

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham’s defence will be different today after Toby Alderweireld was injured in the club’s last league game against Manchester City.

The Belgian had started four consecutive league games alongside Eric Dier in the heart of the Tottenham defence.

Jose Mourinho had trusted him after repeated errors from Davinson Sanchez, who had started the campaign as a first choice.

Alderweireld’s absence has now opened the door for another centre back to get more playing time.

Mourinho will have to pick from Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Taganga to replace Alderweireld, and Danny Mills has tipped the latter to get the nod.

Tanganga has not played so many games this season due to injuries, but he was handed his Tottenham debut by Mourinho last year and he has been worth giving a first-team chance.

Mils thinks that the choice of whom to replace Alderweireld comes down to either Tanganga and Sanchez before he picked the 21-year-old to get the nod because of his speed.

He told Football Insider: “It’s either Japhet Tanganga or Davinson Sanchez that will come in. It’ll come down to what Jose Mourinho has seen in training and what he thinks is the right way to go.

“Both players can be outstanding on their day, both players have pace. I think it’s going to be that combination of who works best on the day, alongside Eric Dier.

“We know Mourinho is always more likely to be defensively minded than attack-minded.

“He’ll be thinking ‘OK, who is he up against? Tammy Abraham, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner.’

“Actually the fact Mourinho has to have pace, like Tanganga has, means the injury to Alderweireld may work into his hands.”
