Premier League manager appears to rule himself out of the Tottenham job

By Bruce Grove -

Graham Potter has been linked with a move to Tottenham as their next manager, but it seems the Englishman isn’t ready to manage a top team yet.

Spurs have been on the lookout for a new permanent boss after they fired Jose Mourinho a few weeks back.

Potter has done very well for the Seagulls and has turned them into an effective team that plays an exciting brand of attacking football.

They are still not a top-half team yet, but they do impress most people who watch them by how they play and how Potter sets his side up for different games.

Spurs have been tipped to take a chance on him and return their team to the time of Mauricio Pochettino when they played beautiful attacking football.

However, after managing Ostersund in Sweden before his move to England, it seems Potter thrives on working as the underdog and he appears to suggest that there would be no room for growth in a team like Tottenham.

Speaking about the tough task of making Brighton a top side, he said via Mail Sport: ‘I’m a little bit of a romantic.

‘I understand 95 per cent of leagues are determined by finance. But there’s a 5 per cent that can affect that. And then it’s about how you get into that 5 per cent and what you need to do with that 5 per cent.’

He continued: ‘I’m not disrespecting those [bigger] clubs. They are fantastic football clubs. But I’m proud of Brighton & Hove Albion. I’m proud to work for this club. I’m proud to work with these players.

‘With this team we’ve got some room to improve, some room to develop. We are in a points and results business. When they’re not so good, you can’t really shout those things too often. I’m still happy with what we’ve done, but I know there’s more to do as well.’

Parker would be a misstep. The jump from one promotion and twice relegated manager we would end up like arteta or lampard.

If he is effectively saying that he LIKES to operate with unknown players on a limited budget then this is as close to a “come and get me” plea you’re ever gonna make to our chairman!

Anyone coming in needs to clear out the senior players who have been responsible for failure over the last few years. Unless that happens it will be Groundhog Day in a matter of months. Attracting in hungry players when they know how Levy runs the club will be an issue as well.

I totally get what Graham Potter is saying, and his rather revealing point regarding the shift from genuine professional at the lower level, to those with egos at the higher end who lack the desire and attitude to achieve success.
You have to have a realistic plan with a structure in place that gives the manager and the players a genuine belief that starting from the top within the football club, there is a real ambition to achieve trophy success on the pitch.
This job requires a man who has to refresh and reshape the squad and I have a feeling Levy still believes most of the squad is good enough to reach a CL spot which is all he wants, so straight from day one there is an issue.
Should Potter somehow be persuaded to take it on I wouldn’t be disappointed.

Although Fulham did do some very good business in the loan market but Parker unlikely played much part in that.

Particularly with how the club is run I think Parker would be seen as too big a risk and I think the only reason he would dip into the academy would be due to a lack of funds, look at his track record….insisted Onomah was part of the Sess deal( as he thought like many did) he was one of the best prospects but when they got promoted he pretty much brought a whole new team in.

Uninspiring but accurate I think.

Eventually probably realistically whittled down to 4 contenders, namely:-
Benitez
Martinez
Parker
Sarri
