When Daniel Levy gave Jose Mourinho to heave-ho, there would have been very few people that would have thought that Mauricio Pochettino would be the man to replace the Portuguese one.
Poch was sitting pretty in the Champions League at that time with PSG, looking like they would retain their Ligue 1 title, in the French Cup final and already winners of the French super cup.
However, since that time, PSG has been dumped out of the Champions League and lost the league title in a one-team league, his position no longer looks so secure.
Then there is the sort of manager that Tottenham are apparently looking for, they do have a criteria and of course, Poch fits that criteria totally.
Most Spurs fans would probably welcome him back to the club with open arms and so the scene is set for a reunion.
This has now been confirmed by the Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke who tweeted the following this morning.
Tottenham open talks with Mauricio Pochettino about returning to the club from PSG. Will be a difficult deal to do, with one year left on his PSG contract, but there's a willingness on both sides.

Brooke is not what I call a tier one reporter in terms of reliability but neither is he part of the gutter press and there is every reason to believe what he is saying.
A big question for you all, would you be happy with a Poch return?

Yup. For must Spurs fans it should be quite obvious that Conte is the wrong man for Levy. Spent like €700m in total at Chelski and Inter. Thats Mou money. Resigning from Inter when told he must sell big before he can buy. Constantly complaining to the press. He wouldnt last a full season working for Levy.
If i did not know better,i would think you stole this from a site I posted on. You are bang on about Conte. I said it word for word. Who wins a title and his major concern is how much money he can spend before the confetti is swept off the field.
Poch must be running out of his redundancy money and is looking for a top up 18 months from now.
We still seem to think Levy will change . Why?
All will fail (in our eyes) while the status quo remains.
Again you are clouded with the poch romance and all the trophies we won under him. Poch is not coming back psg and Harry in latest blog have stated this. I would rather have conte who is winning the league and has a history of winning and standing up to bullies like levy than poch who will never get that pot of gold you talk about because levy knows he is a yes man and will do as he is told.
I’d rather bring Sherwood back than Poch at this time.
At least there’d be the comedy value with the man in the gillet.
Antonio Conte joined Chelsea in the very same position THFC are in now, a squad that were not playing well & finished 7th(?) the previous season.
(Admittedly they’d won stuff in previous seasons)
If you look at what he does, takes teams playing ‘less than their best’ & makes/guides them to being far better, (barring his spell at Atalanta), did it at Bari, Siena, Juventus, Chelsea & Inter.
In the bookies it’s all over sky like it’s fact.deary me…
Pooch is a perfect fit for Levy as he will spout Levy’s mantra once again about being in a different project, having a different philosophy blah blah blah… this will not convince Kane to stay as he cannot afford another 5 year project. This may work for Levy and Pooch as PSG will want definite success next season and Pooch will be offered another long term contract by Levy with no pressure to win anything but top four. Rinse and repeat is just what Levy is looking for. Levy wants to get back to where he was pre the stadium build spending no money on players but sucking as much money out of qualifying for Europe as he can.
Depending on which information/journalism/rumours one believes, because of an eye-watering wage offered & he liked living in London & the challenge, etc.
& we’re still waiting for the Danny Blanchflower quote to get used?
Harry Kane possibly leaving is the prime example of it’s irrelevance 5+ generations later.
And what do you get for finishing outside the top 4 while playing rubbish football? What’s that trophy called?
Conte would’ve done a much much worse job than poch given the same restraints. I’d rather give poch a bucket load of money to see what he could do with it than the mini mourinho called Conte.
Er, FACTS please!
Ramos was sacked for guiding THFC into the relegation zone, 2 points from 8 games, the FOLLOWING season!
So your “There is no rhyme or reason, it’s all about timing??” isn’t strictly accurate here!
Agreed. If Poch stays at PSG, he should be measured on what they achieve next season.
Had the same ‘discussion’ at the start of the season, you’re wasting your time & energy trying to understand the psyche of people who don’t care about WINNING whatever cup it is over settling for finishing top 4 – the Arsene Wenger mentality, FFS!
If you recall when poch was in charge at spurs he never really tried in the cups look at his record. Again if you can’t win something in France with psg god you should not be a manager. One was the charityshield but ok its a start. As for City well they had a bad year made up for it this year. As for poch next year well as lille have lost their manager and God knows how many players and they were the only true team to challenge psg he should win next year at least something again. The difference between psg and us is levy and the board. To have any chance you need to be strong from the start and I can’t see poch being that man.
Conte to Spurs is an entertaining idea. But not a realistic one. As a cheque book manager, Tottenham probably isn’t the club for him. Like Mourinho, Contes road to success is paved with big money. He is the 3rd highest spending manager in World the last 5 years! Cmon now, be real. He spent what, around €280m during his two seasons at Inter? And still he was complaining to the press that he needed more players in.
He resigned after winning the title, allegedly because the board had told him there wouldn’t be as much money to spend this summer. Doesn’t sound like a good match with Spurs at all.
The sentimentalists do NOT understand, LOSING a final actually counts for nothing.
We’ll have the Danny Blanchflower quotes thrown up again soon – let’s hope Harry Kane pays attention to it as WINNING stuff isn’t or shouldn’t be “first & last” to the (50+ years on) 21st century footballer!?
PSG aren’t actually the best ‘team’ in France at the moment, they have defensive issues and Poch hasn’t made a single signing yet. But h’e still won two trophies, ok one is like the Charity Shield. The other is like winning the FA Cup, and he has a good run in the Champions League, not bad for six months and no signings is it?
Yet you want to keep the loser tag attached to him because it fits your narrative. So what if he won nothing at Espaniol, Southampton or a Levy-run Spurs. Who’s won stuff under Levy?
There is top 4 and no 1 a big difference thats why Harry wants to leave. Conte is a winner poch is not sadly not near conte. Blame it on what you want but putting poch back in will not get us No1 and I doubt it would get us top 4 either. Not with this squad without Harry. Without Harry it will take a very strong manager and poch is not the man. Conte is.
I’m not sure what you’re talking about either. I didn’t say that I didn’t want us to win anything, we can be in the top four and also win stuff. It’s what big clubs do, it’s the standard.
In fact you will find that that the teams that win titles are generally in the top 4 aren’t they… Secondly, look at the teams that hoover up the domestic trophies, most of them are also top 4 clubs. So there’s very little evidence that not focusing on top 4 brings any greater success elsewhere.
You’re clearly barking up the wrong tree mate..
At last some one with vision who wants to win and talks sense.
So he won two trophies with the strongest team in France with some of the worlds best players its the very least I would have expected in that league. We all on here know levy and the board are the problem but putting a manager in who failed to win anything in his four odd + years with us the first time is not the answer. Maybe for some with short memories. What about the famous plan b with poch he never had one. Why. Oh yes levy. If he could not stand up to levy the first time why would this time be any different. Sometimes I think a lot of fans have been drinking from enic cup of failures its all they know and deserve. Which is it a romantic notion of maybe winning something or the real thing. I still say conte over poch every time. He will stand up for himself poch won’t.
It’s France FFS!
One of the trophies was the equivalent of the charity shield.
A ONE team league & PSG came 2nd!
I would rather get top 4 consistently. This way you can still attract and more importantly pay a higher calibre of player, thus giving you a greater chance of winning silverware. Conte like Mourinho have won big trophies, but they have done it with top players and big squads. We don’t have enough quality across the board. Poch can make a shit team perform to a higher standard. You need to accept that we’re a shit team again, not the good team he built that over performed.
I should hope so….good.
living in France, I can 100% tell you this is utter BS. They are laughing it off on french radio and on the sports channels
NO!
Whilst I fully appreciate all Mauricio did for THFC, there’s simply NO room for sentimentality or romanticism.
This is largely the same group of players that sealed his fate before so what’s changed?
For me, there’s only one ‘rumoured’ manager for THFC to get at this time to oversee the squad overhaul & get them all playing/fighting for the same cause, Mr. Antonio Conte. PLEASE.
Sad and embarrassing !
I’d like Conte too, if you’d ever read my posts you’d know my position on Levy is quite clear…
You haven’t answered the question.
Sorry the feeling I’m getting about Harry is he has given us many great years and now he would like to win medals you know trophies. The things we used to win before enic. Bringing poch back will not change Harry because under poch we didn’t Win anything. Harry does not want to be in the top four he wants and deserves to be no 1 thats why he must leave because we will never be no 1 under poch. If he can’t do it with psg he won’t do it second time around with us.
Sack LEVY. THAT should be the ONLY move this summer.
Total car crash
He’s won two trophies in six months working for someone else, someone serious about winning. The fact he won no silverware under Levy is completely understandable…
This is getting ridiculous now.
What would be the point of this? Really ffs?
In my humble opinion:
When Poch came in the first time he got rid of the deadwood, all the players that had caused issues in the past, such as Ade, Kaboul etc.
He had a team that played for him, all on the same page.
I agree he needed players and was let down by levy, so the rot set in again.
If we hire him he needs to be given the green light to get rid of the dead wood, and buy the right players
To the contributor who wrote ‘Did he have you on the deg of your seat’, yep, almost every week that team had me on the edge of my seat.
Would i like him back?? I loved that man being manager of our club, i could never see him leaving, but I’m still not sure if he should come back. Romantically, he would create an amazing feel good factor around the club again.
lastly, who out there would be better? Potter, Parker etc etc. Whoever comes in will need to get rid of several, and bring a few in, but what we all do know is what Poch was doing when he had the team he wanted on the pitch…
I’d gladly see poch return, aslong as all toxicity is clensed from the squad and players with too much apparent influence like sissoko, winks, dier are removed and replaced with players of hojberg attitude and magnitude

PSG have defensive issues, like City did last season, did Pep ‘lose’ the league too in that case? If those get fixed I feel Poch wins the league in France next season. There have been no signings at PSG since he’s been there either.
Anyway, he’s won two trophies in six months so the ‘loser’ tag is actually now lies. There are two silver pots sitting in cabinets in Paris that Poch won, “yeah but no but he’s still a loser” no longer cuts it…
What are you talking about you don’t make any sense. I said conte over poch. A winner over someone who gets what levy and the board want a top four finish. So you never want spurs to win anything ever again you are happy with top four is that it. That’s all you want no winning the league, winning the fa Cup or the cl league winning it or the europa league none of them just top 4. Are you Daniel in disguise.
Kane might want Poch to return and for him to be backed for all we know. They were quite close.
Did we win it oh no thats right we got the loosers medal.
for me Conte is a backwards step, attracts quality players and has a proven record? sound like anybody we’ve just sacked? not to mention a backwards defensive approach, do we want another Mourinho? IMO no thanks.
Another looser lost in the romance of the past. Yes with the best team in France he lost the league but won cups something he did not believe in when he was at spurs.
Personally I don’t feel he will come back, yet. I think Conte with backing would be a good shout, in fact many managers with backing would be a decent shout!
This
Two English teams in the final again too, it is the level we should be looking to be at. I’m interested to know just what ‘trophies’ fans would rather win at the expense of being in the Champions League… 🤔
although I liked Poch, I think I would prefer Conte. Its got to be a backwards step. What has Poch learned from a year away? Conte attracts quality players and has a proven record.
Poch is a puppet really I bet he got you off your seat a few times, I
m no youngster and he is the best weve had for many yearsVillareal
s 2 better players last night was Capoue and Foytht coming to Spursboth got smashed to bits at Spurs (expectancy)
Conte I agree is best option for now because we need a manager who can challenge the norm but be realistic he ain
I’d rather be in the Champions League every season than win a minor trophy, such as the League Cup or Dopey League. It’s the top table and you have to be a much better team consistently over a several seasons than you do winning either of those.
Anyway, why is it ‘either or’? Are you suggesting we sacrifice Champions League qualification to win the League Cup? Why do we need to do that?
Urm we did get to a CL final you know…
Are you honestly saying you’d rather see Spurs play in the ropey conference league than in the CL?
The reason the Poch reign collapsed is because Levy failed to buy a single player for a year and then only one before the next season opened after the final. 95% of Spurs fans can now see that, why can’t you?
I know its levy but poch coming back is a bad idea real bad. A squad much the same as he left, same loosers. We need a winner who will demand things. I love the idea of conte because he will scare the hell out of levy and the board but poch. That is just saying carry on doing what you did before and remember we have the final say which poch would do.
Ramos was sacked months after winning our only trophy under Levy. Whereas Jol, Arry, Poch all got several seasons. There is no rhyme or reason, it’s all about timing in sport.
It was Levy that lost the players, not Poch. Poch wasn’t backed and I’d love him back for feel good factor alone.
for the record, he won two trophies this season, granted he lost the League but he inherited a team that was behind Lille and Lille won something like 17 out of 18 games while Poch was in charge. Hard to pin all the blame on him for that
Sorry what trophy do you get for 4th oh yes gold not silver. Are you Daniel in disguise. Remember were we were when he lost the team and was sacked. No away win in nearly a year. A year let that sink in. Poch is not a winner. Poch is soup on a winters night. Conte is champagne on new years eve. Wake up god.
We came closer to winning things under Poch than any other manager with the sole exception of one mickey mouse cup, in the last 22 years. The problem is not ever the manager mate it’s Levy. Not possible to win with a loser of a chairman who finds it impossible to back any manager, even Mourinho who was his dream boss.
With dier sanchez Toby aurier Doherty winks sissoko alli and no kane. Kane is gone he wants to win things not feel like he might someday win something which we never did under poch the first time.
So all the other managers Levy sacked won us trophies did they? Incidentally how many times did we get top 4 without Poch?
Kane is leaving because he wants to win things what did we win under poch???. Kane is gone no matter how comes in he has had enough.
Anyone on here even thinking poch when he has won jack is mad. He is a yes man, a man who failed to get levy and the board to back him and left us in 15th. Why would you ever think of having him back. A love of winning jack is that the Tottenham way now. A love of profits before silver. For gods sake wake up. Do you ever want us to win anything ever again. Like I said conte on a 4yr with a walk away at the 2yr point is the way not more of nothing.
It would be great if he came back, but he’s going to come back to the majority of the squad he left behind so is it going to work ?
He needs to demand final say on ALL transfers as any condition of him returning and he needs to insist that players are moved on quickly to enable him to properly rebuild the side.
And while he’s at it, he should also insist on Steve Hitchen being removed from his duties as head of player recruitment.
It makes me wonder if this is only happening because they think it’ll be cheaper to re-hire Poch and subsequently keep Kane than it would be to sign a quality replacement for Kane if he did leave.
Why on earth would Conte want to come to Spurs? Be realistic at least.
I’ve got a feeling the feel good would be short lived
The one tool he doesn’t need being Levy of course.
Exactly. He should get a full season with PSG to show if he’s got it in him to at least win Ligue 1 (they won it 7 out of the last 9 seasons).
Right now, it’s too soon, and as you say, the players are still largely the same ones that stopped playing for him.
Maybe someday, but not now.
I agree with your Poch comments and would like Conte but feel he’s more likely to end up at Madrid or PSG
I can’t really believe this is very likely. For starters it would mean Levy admitting how he got everything so badly wrong in sacking him in the first place, and I just don’t think Levy is a big enough man to do that – admit how wrong he was.
The only possible reasoning behind it if it was to happen would be Joe Lewis intervening and forcing Levy to eat so much humble pie that it oozed out of his ears.
If the fairy-tale did come true, and I’d love it to, then I trust Lewis has allocated Poch tremendous new funds to at least try and compensate for the lack of support he originally received. Okay we’re in debt but with the amount we owe a few hundred million is not going to make that much difference in the long run if it gets us back into the CL riches.
The shambles conducted by Levy in his miserly support of Poch not only cost us trophies but also billions in CL and TV money since we plummeted out of that prestigious competition that is the very life blood of Daniel Levy and his new stadium. Speculate to accumulate Daniel.
Get him back – the feel good alone is better than what we have at the moment and 1,000,000% better than getting in Potter, Parker or Martinez.
don’t forget, he didn’t fail us, Levy did. Hopefully he will be given the tools he needs.
Mauricio Pochettino, he’s magic…
Get him back and back him this time
Jeez, no. We need to remember why he left un the first place – players had given up & he’d run out of ideas on how to motivate them. Those players are still there, just older versions. He wouldn’t have any more control over players than he had. Give it to Conte for 2 years so he can get rid if the sponges which really don’t give a ….
Poch is a puppet in the manager world a yes man. Tell me in ur top four does that include alli, winks, sissoko, lamela, aurier, Doherty, dier and sanchez. All players of average ability who would not make it in a real team. Would city buy any of these players. Would Liverpool. Would united or Chelsea. Go backwards or go forward. Go back to a manager who won nothing because he was not strong enough to convince the board or the chairman to back him or go forward under conte. See my bit below on him. I know which I would prefer.
Conte and Levy is a match made in hell. Here’s a man who’s fallen out with every board he’s worked under.
Levy the ‘arch negotiator’ coming back saying “Now look Antonio, we tried to make the numbers work for Skriniar and Martinez but Inter weren’t playing ball with our offer of £10M plus two tonnes of Double Gloucester (almost in date) from our cheese room. So we’ve got you two shills on loan from Ligue 1 and, of course, there’s still Eric Dier”
So Poch for squad cleansing but realistically a different manager to take us forward.
Like most have said id be happy with Poch but not now, if possible I like the idea of Conte to get the wheels moving. A positive of Poch would be all the dross that downed tools for him would be moved on, which any manager would need to do but Poch already knows who the wasters are.
Managed Chelsea when they had no european football. Money talks. That’s what Conte wants, money for him and to build a squad.
Bale has already gone so that is redundant.
Why appoint a manager who has only ever been at one club with very mixed results. Might as well get Eddie Howe then.
Wow, just when you think you have seen it all. This smacks of Levy furiously swiping right on football manager Tinder, getting no matches and thinking “maybe my old manager wasn’t so bad after all”.
I have a lot of time for Poch and that’s why it would be sad for me to see him return. I can’t see any good coming from it. The truth is, the further you go away from Spurs the more likely you are to have success.
Kieran Trippier – inexplicably sold and now the proud owner of a La Liga winners medal.
Christian Eriksen – couldn’t match his ambition. Wins the Italian Serie A.
Juan Foyth – couldn’t buy a seat on the bench at Spurs. Waking up this morning with a Europa League medal around his neck.
Kyle Walker – this Saturday he could win his 11th trophy since leaving Spurs. Let that sink in.
Oliver Skipp – goes to Norwich has a fantastic season and wins the Championship.
These are just recent examples. The list of players leaving our beloved club and winning elsewhere is a long one.
What about the loyal schmucks who stay and fight for the cause?. Well, Dele, Winks, Dier, Ndombele and Bergwijn will be watching the Euros from their overpriced sofas this summer instead of making a contribution.
With all this in mind, how can Daniel Levy sit in front of a player or a manager and with a straight face say “come to Spurs, we’re really going places”.
we would stabilise into a top four team, wow what exactly is it you want then, because that`s a long way from where we are now and would be a good place to start
He told the world he needed new players and did not get the support from the board, had he had got the support then failed then fine but he did not so maybe to get him back he would need assurances from said board ???
He took on inter and they were not a top four team to be honest they were floating. If there is even a chance this guy can be got he is the man. Kane is gone even if conte were to sign. Sell sissoko, winks, lamela, dier, Sanchez, Toby, aurier and Doherty. Give him the money to build a winning team which he has proved in the past he can. Or go back to the past and win jack with alli sissoko winks dier and sanchez.
NO! He couldn’t win the league with PSG, he never treats English cups with any enthusiasm. He came 3rd in a 2 horse race. Reaching the Champs league final was way more luck than judgement, (other teams got us out the group, VAR against city, Ajax were the better team over both legs). We would stabalise into a top 4 team, but we wont win anything.
If he agrees to return without getting a promise (signed in blood) from Levy that a wholesale turnover of players can begin, then he is a fool, and I’d be worried.
I would strongly doubt Conte would join us, we’re a level below where he believes he operates. Maybe if we where still consistent CL, but we’re not…
Also one of the reasons for him leaving inter is apparently a lack of money to spend and a board requirement to cut the playing budget by 20%
I’d go for Zidane, even just to see him shove Bale out the door a second time
Is Poch really the person we need right now? The results were on a decline for a year before he left and the squad isn’t that much different. He was great and I would welcome him back in a few years but not now. Why not try for Zidane, Conte, Gerrard. If not then I’d be tempted to let Ryan carry on
I would definitely have Poch back… In about 2 more years when the crud that failed him previously have all be shipped out the door.
Why an earth does anyone think he can get a tune out of a team mostly consisting of the same players, only older and even more jaded?
I’d go for Conte over Poch… if Conte move really has ‘legs’ (and he hasn’t got his sights set on one of the top clubs that are suddenly managerless)
Well this says a lot about spurs under enic and the board. Profits before silverware. We have a shot at conte who wins wins wins. Appoint him on a four year deal with the option to walk away at the 2yr point no compensation to be paid or poch. This is the man when he was sacked we were 14th or 15th had not won an away game in nearly a year and the players who mostly are all still there had lost it. So do we move forward or backward. A winner in conte or a manager who couldn’t win the league in France with the best team in a one horse league.
But in, in general, I’d welcome him back (especially given the managers that remain in the pot after most of the ‘good ones’ have mysteriously declined Levy’s advances).
Poch also had two issues that Mourinho had (expressed in different ways). Sticking to a strategy in a match when it isn’t working (no plan B) and having favourites that many fans just don’t understand (Dele Ali a nailed on starter for every match)?
Poch would, one would think, make a return contingent on having more influence in transfer dealings… and a promise of decent funds for such transfers. Otherwise…. he’ll be on a hiding to nothing.
