Pochettino Advocate Would Be “Very Surprised” If Mourinho Doesn’t Win Spurs A Trophy

By Joe Fish -

Former Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet has said that he would be “very surprised” if Jose Mourinho doesn’t deliver a trophy as manager.

This comes from a big advocate of Mauricio Pochettino, as Poyet told PowerSportsTV in Turkey this week that his fellow South American will have the pick of his next job from across the biggest clubs in the world.

The Special One was brought in to do the one thing that the Argentine could not – get the club over the line for a major piece of silverware. Poch lost in two finals, two semi-finals, and finished second in the Premier League.

Four months into Mourinho’s reign, we look further away than ever from ending a drought which stretches back to our 2008 League Cup triumph, but Poyet is confident that the decorated Portuguese, a winner of 25 major trophies as a manager, will do the business once again, if afforded the time.

“What I say in the time he did the job is, if you give him three years at the club, I will be surprised if he doesn’t win a trophy. I will be very surprised,” Poyet told Stats Platform, via the London Evening Standard.

“Maybe he’s unlucky and next year we don’t have the League Cup and there will be one trophy less to play for, but he knows how to get players to play for important games.

It is lazy to think that trophies are now going to fall into our laps with ease, just because Mourinho has won everywhere else he has managed.

I have faith in Jose that, if we were ever in a position to challenge for a trophy again; in a semi-final, a final, or a title run-in, that his nous and experience could make the difference where Pochettino couldn’t.

But I’m not sure I have faith in him to rebuild us to ever reach that point.

Loved poyet tika taka style with flair, shame he got injured loads and he didnt spend more time with us. Loved poch. I will only love maureen if he gets us competing with the big boys again like poch managed. I have no faith in Levys eye for talent with all the recent bargain bucket duds something has to change. A few reports came out when maureen became gaffer that he would bring a director of football with him for transfers.. I am presuming Levy blocked this to do the job himself because no new director has arrived and its been months.

Jose’s MO is to buy and win. He did this with Utd and with a mix of his, Moyes’ and Van Gaal’s buys, he left the club in a brilliant mess. I do think the club were wrong to choose Pogba over him though and this was his downfall. Should we buy five 29/30 year olds with experience and win an FA cup leaving us with an ageing squad? If that is what it takes to win in the short term, YES. I want us to win something. If it goes ‘Pete Tong’ this whole situation is on teflon Levy’s head. If Levy does not supply Jose with substantial funds I cannot imagine Mourinho being as diplomatic in the pressers as Poch. He’ll leave/get sacked and we’ll be back to square one…….again!

i barely remember it. i have better memories of some of the CL games. Tehy are gone – Jose has never built a legacy and never will. He has no interest. He knows winning an FA cup is enough – for me i would have rather spend the money he will get on back poch…but Poch was bored of the same old crap and was done by the CL final.

Just be our luck to win the FA Cup with no fans at the game and no one allowed to attend a victory parade. Great to win a trophy but its challenging year in year out we want. The 2008 Carling Cup wasn’t built on it didn’t lead to better things. In my pantheon of Spurs great moments it’s well down the list.

Will be a league cup, maybe FA cup at a push. Kiss goodbye to a Champions League appearance as Jose has learnt over the years, unless you can buy the top cups, you are better off focusing your team to win the 6 games it takes to win the minor cups. We will see Jose out spend Poch, and maybe get 1 cup to show for it and a worse squad (I predict Jose will be here another season, maybe 2, and spend more in that time than Poch EVER spent). This is not a legacy manager, this is a short term fix to all those that saw Poch’s last 3months and forgot the years before it. Poch’s biggest issue was Levy, and Levy spending, so when we see how much he will give Jose it will make me cry, the amount of windows where Poch needed just 1 top purcahse.

Gus is basing his claim on a belief that Mourinho “knows how to get players to perform in the important games.” But that belief – like the sister prediction that he would sort the defence out – is not being borne out. Look at the three games he would most like to have won this season, against the two clubs that have recently sacked him. He was comprehensively out-thought and out-fought in all three games by novice coaches Olly and Frank.

It’s no longer 2012. Mourinho has been unable to adapt to high paced, dynamic, pressing football – the new winning football – and is now employed at a club where he won’t be allowed to outbid everyone for the best players.
