Player will consider the “bigger picture” and join Tottenham instead of London rival

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham and West Ham have been linked with a move for Jesse Lingard this summer and Noel Whelan reckons he will choose to join Spurs over the Hammers.

West Ham was in impressive form last season and they finished the campaign inside the Europa League places.

Tottenham, on the other hand, could only earn a European Conference League spot.

Lingard spent the second half of the season on loan with the Hammers and he was in blistering form for them and they want to make the transfer permanent.

Football Insider reported earlier that the Hammers fear that Spurs would beat them to sign the Manchester United midfielder.

They believe the Lilywhites are their biggest competitors as they try to sign him.

The same source claimed on Saturday that Nuno Espirito Santo wants Lingard in exchange if Manchester United moves for Harry Kane.

Whelan is now saying that Lingard will consider the bigger picture and choose to join Tottenham, who are a much bigger club, over West Ham if he has to pick one of them.

Whelan was asked if he thought West Ham could lure Lingard back to London, and he told Football Insider: “I think in terms of European football, of course.

“But then you’ve got to look at the bigger picture. Tottenham are rebuilding. He will understand there will be process there that is not going to change overnight. It might take a season.

“When you look at everything that’s Tottenham have got to offer in terms of stadium, history, players that are already there he could be playing with, he’d absolutely want that.

“You want to play with (Heung-min) Son, you want to play with (Pierre-Emile) Hojbjerg. You want to play with top-class players and be a successful side. Now they could be successful, but not straight away.

“This is a process and a process probably over two to three years I can imagine. If you get the right players in they could end up turning their fortunes around.

“They could be a team that is more competitive again against Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United.”

I like Lingardinho. Wish we had him last season. For now, something tells me Dele might be a Nuno-type player. I think he could have a big year.

We have one and half attacking mid. Not over Locelso for me. The other half is NDOMBELE. But I get it Lingard can do lots of roles, he is always looking forward. Maybe ahead of Ali, too much dancing and slowing the attack. Ali lost his way because Poch thought he is a #10 as a result of him popping a few goals, but he is too slow and deliberate. He will never be seen as a central attacking mid again unless he leaves Spurs and everyone comes back to their senses including Ali.

Have never been a massive fan of Lingard, but he seems to be getting better with age and I’d take him all day long over most if not all of our current crop of attacking mids.

Hojbjerg made the Euros team, as did Walker, who was Mourinho’s pick as the outstanding player of the tournament until Italy won the penalties.
