Opinion: Spurs Linked To Cracking Youngster We Simply Don’t Have Room For

Tottenham Hotspur are one of several clubs who hold an interest in signing Burnley winger Dwight McNeil, reports The Guardian.

Crystal Palace are believed to be preparing a January bid for the 20-year-old in the event that they lose talisman Wilfried Zaha, who wanted to leave the club in the summer and is expected to be on Chelsea’s radar next month, now that the Blues have had their transfer embargo lifted.

The Guardian adds that Burnley won’t be forced into selling McNeil, who has been arguably their standout performer this season, in the New Year.

But there is an inevitably that the England U21 international is destined to move up at some point, and his next club will be getting a fine player.

McNeil has started all 17 of Burnley’s Premier League games this season on the left, scoring only the once but assisting four goals, and several more indirectly with the Clarets profiting from knockdowns from his set pieces.

He is not a quick and flashy winger but can beat a man to create room to swinging in crosses which are of a David Beckham-esque consistent quality.

And, needless to say as a Sean Dyche player, he puts in a defensive shift too.

I’d back a punt on McNeil, had we not taken one on Ryan Sessegnon. With Mourinho indicating that Sess is likely to be blooded as a winger, as Football London reports, we would not have room for McNeil as well, seeing as Son Heung-min is the second name on the teamsheet in that position.

A left side of Sessegnon and McNeil would be an exciting prospect a few years down the line, if and when Son were to move on – and I hope and pray that isn’t any time soon. But the timing simply isn’t right for this one.
