“Not good to watch” Pundit spot on with his comments about Tottenham

Noel Whelan believes there is a similarity between how Nuno Espirito Santo sets up his Tottenham team and how Jose Mourinho set them up when he was their manager.

One obvious thing is that both managers set their team up to be more defensive.

The Lilywhites haven’t had the best of starts to this season and their style of play has left fans asking for much more.

Former Leeds United man, Whelan believes Spurs have a very talented squad now and Nuno Santo has to find a way to play with a strategy that will suit the players at his disposal.

If Spurs keeps playing defensively, they would hardly harness the talents of their current squad members.

The likes of Harry Kane have struggled at this start of the season and his struggles might not be unconnected to Spurs style of play and Whelan says the Tottenham fans want to see more exciting football and the Lillywhite’s game should be developed around the players’ skills.

“They need to step up their game,” he told Football Insider.

“They need to start showing more consistency in games and get into some sort of rhythm – it’s been too stop-start this season.

“They need to find a style of play that suits them because it’s been a bit too negative at times.

“The Tottenham fans expect exciting football matches and a bit more of an attacking style.

“We saw under Jose Mourinho that the defensive approach is not good to watch.

“It frustrated the fans at times because the array of attacking talent that they have wasn’t being used.”
