‘Not a Conte type’ – Pundit applauds Spurs for getting one deal in particular done

By Eddie Razo -

Tottenham Hotspur appears to be on the verge of allowing Steven Bergwijn to leave north London and head to his home country to complete his €30 million transfer to Ajax. The 24-year-old never lived up to the fee Spurs paid for in 2020, but are recouping most of their initial investment.

During a segment on talkSPORT, Simon Jordan praised Tottenham for moving on from Bergwijn. Furthermore, the English football pundit states that this transfer begins the process of getting rid of players who aren’t consistent with what manager Antonio Conte demands.

“[Bergwijn] came in with a huge fanfare and a lot of adoration from José Mourinho, whom I made a four-act play about what they were buying and what they got,” Jordan said.

“And I think he epitomizes certain aspects of Tottenham that, that Conte is beginning to get rid of, which is that people that can do it but don’t do it enough and don’t have the substance that Conte will require.”

Jordan adds that Conte is beginning to clear out players the Italian boss feels are not his type of player to help usher in this new era of Tottenham football. The 52-year-old has started adding talents that he views to fit his vision of where he wants to take Spurs next season.

“I think getting him out for the money they’ve actually bought him for is probably good business for Tottenham. And it starts to clear the decks,” Jordan said. “For Conte type of player is he’s not a Conte type; he’s a player that will dip in and out.”

“Clearly, he’s got a lot of ability, but at the level that Conte wants his players to operate, I think he’s just that sort of scintilla short.”

It was in the interest of both parties to move on; it seems as though everyone is happy with this deal. Spurs recoup most of their initial fee, and Bergwijn gets more playing time.

Not really! It just means we got our money back on Bergy, which given his recent international form is fair value.

Fanfare? I didn’t know who he was and was never impressed by him. Getting 30m euros is helpful as it helps recoup some of the expenditure. I wish he had done more but he didn’t have the quality.

Don’t be daft! How does selling player A have any relation to the price of player B?

A more accurate statement would be to say the cost of Steven Bergwijn now in effect reduced to a couple of million quid.

So the cost of Richarlison is now in effect reduced to £25m. Are the naysayers happy?

No, I appreciate that he did have a reputation as a very promising young player in Holland, but so did Vincent Janssen! My point was, he certainly didn’t arrive HERE with much fanfare, whatever his reputation was in Holland. In truth, Janssen arrived with far more fanfare amongst the fan base here.

Either way, I think Bergy is a good player and ironically, with his recent prolific goalscoring record for Holland, he has enhanced his reputation. Hence why Levy was determined to recoup the money we outlaid on him. I think the real problem with Bergwijn was a lack of self-confidence, I don’t believe it was laziness.

I think you are correct . Bergwin arrived in England with a big reputation and the irony is he will return to Holland with a bigger one .
This is a strong indication where the Premier league is in this world , a collection of individuals from anywhere/everywhere who collectively make this fabulous league .
Bergwin is undoubtedly a very decent footballer but probably unsuited to the hurly burly relentless nature of English football , especially the consistency of performance , sometimes the sheer physicality of it must be daunting .
His name will definitely be heard again , possibly terrorising our England team one day on the big stages , but ……….Steven , wish you nothing but the best………. C O Y S !!!!!

U only watch English football he was a massive player in Holland n did come with alot of fanfare n nxt big thing from holland but he’s too lazy like a lot of good young players just like dele n then they just expect to play week in week out with out any hard work apart from lifting weights but this all comes from schools no winners or losers n then when these young players hit the real world n have to work hard n they get rejected or don’t play there heads drop that’s why only the top top players make the grade nowadays

The problem for Bergwijn is I don’t think the game fans will remember him for was the ‘late Leicester show’…it’s THAT game against Liverpool when he could have really made a name for himself with a couple of perfect opportunities.

He wasn’t quite composed or skilful enough to take them. The end.

I make you 100% correct he just sort of appeared. I dont even know what he is on about a four act play I wonder if Jordan actually knows.

Simon Jordan should get his facts straight. Bergwijn didn’t come in with huge fanfare at all. A typically late, January transfer window, Levy, ‘hopeful punt’, would probably be more accurate! The high point of Bergy’s Spurs career was arguably his debut against City, up until the Leicester injury time heroics. Definitely in the best interests of both parties to move on though, that much is undeniable and credit to Levy for getting our/his money back!
