New Spurs signing tipped to make his first start of the season against Chelsea

By Bruce Grove -

Alasdair Gold has tipped Joe Rodon to make his first Tottenham start of the season after the injury to Toby Alderweireld.

The Welshman only joined Tottenham in the last transfer window as the club looked for cover at the back.

He came through the ranks at Swansea and he had been on their books for his entire career before the summer transfer.

He hasn’t been given the chance to start a game for Tottenham yet, but his first start has been brought forward by the injury to Alderweireld.

He was the player that was chosen to replace the Belgian at the weekend, and Gold thinks that Tottenham will likely give him the chance to start in their next Premier League game.

He wasn’t registered for the Europa League and that means he won’t be eligible to play for them against Ludogorets this week.

But Gold thinks that he has made himself a good option to start against Chelsea when the Premier League returns at the weekend.

He praised the defender for putting in a fine performance in the few minutes that he played against Manchester City.

He said on his YouTube channel: “Rodon has certainly put himself into the mix to start at Stamford Bridge next weekend. He came off the bench, and in big circumstances. I think the biggest credit to him, the biggest thing you could say – you didn’t really notice a difference in the defending, and I think that’s massive.

“He replaced Alderweireld, who’d had a brilliant game, and Spurs didn’t really slack in their defensive resolve at all; he did very well. So, by the looks of it – because he can’t play in Europe, either – I think he might start at Stamford Bridge if Alderweireld can’t play. So that’s big for him – massive opportunity.”
