Mourinho cannot help Alli because midfielder will not fit his current style of play

Dele Alli has emerged as an outcast in the current Tottenham squad as they desperately search for an end to their trophy drought.

After many near misses, Spurs have gone for the jugular by naming Jose Mourinho as their current manager.

The Special One is simply a winner, and Daniel Levy has trusted him to end Tottenham’s wait for another trophy.

He started this season with that in mind and hauled off Alli at half time in his first league game against Everton when the Englishman couldn’t deliver what he wanted.

Alli has struggled to play for the team since that time.

The midfielder wants to leave, but the club will not accept that demand.

PSG have remained interested in his signature, and they tried to sign him again in the last transfer window, but Levy wasn’t prepared to lose the talented attacker.

As he remains with the team, he will hopefully look to convince Mourinho he is worth a second chance.

But The Telegraph’s Sam Wallace says it will be hard for him to get back in the team because of his manager’s “defence-attack” style.

He writes: “It is hard to say what comes next. The greatest barrier to him leaving Spurs has been Levy, who had a mixed summer transfer window and does not regard the revival of Alli’s career as his responsibility. 

“Mourinho is as sympathetic as he can be but still unwilling to find a regular place for Alli in this new Spurs era in which the defence-attack compromise seems to be defined more by the characteristics of a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg rather than a Christian Eriksen or Mousa Dembele.”
