A new Tottenham hero was born on Sunday when Steven Bergwijn marked his debut with a fine goal to help shoot down champions Manchester City.
The 22-year-old became an instant hit and his popularity with the fans appeared to be matched among his teammates, who mobbed him following his 63rd-minute strike.
While Bergwijn looks like he has the potential to do more damage in the Premier League, his debut was cut short six minutes later due to a minor fitness issue.
Bergwijn went down with what looked like cramp and, after having his leg stretched out by City goalkeeper Ederson, he was hooked by a wisely-cautious Jose Mourinho.
The incident should perhaps be taken as a sign that Spurs must remain patient with their new man.
Although it is natural to get carried away following such a devastating start, we must not forget that he is not used to performing in such a fast and competitive league.
Five goals and ten assists for PSV in the Eredivisie earlier this season is further evidence that Bergwijn is a real talent. But it is likely that it will take some time before we can expect him to perform at his best in what are more demanding surroundings.
To the tune of Steve Gerrard he scores from 40 yards….Steve Bergwijn Bergwijn he’s our new Son Heung-Min, he’s better than Eriksen Steve Bergwijn Bergwijn
I’ll take jammy all day long. Bergwijn’s is going to be tremendous for us.
His minor injury suggests it might be wise to ease new players into the demands of the EPL. Tanguy has struggled, Lo C had early fitness issues and now Bergwijn. Easy to see why Mourinho is careful with the talented Parrot. Sorry, DD.
PSV was his team.
Great goal. Jammy win…
