Liverpool legend has his say on Tottenham title chances

By Bruce Grove -

Former Liverpool ace John Barnes isn’t getting carried away by Tottenham’s fine start to the Premier League season and he reckons that the Lilywhites will, at best, finish inside the top four, but not win the league.

Spurs are currently second on the Premier League table after they made a fine start to life in the English top flight.

They are now being managed by Jose Mourinho who has already won three Premier League titles.

The Special One collects silverware wherever he has been, nevertheless, Barnes isn’t convinced that this is the year that Spurs will win the league.

He claimed that Manchester City and Liverpool are still favourites for the title despite their struggles this season.

He added that Tottenham is performing slightly above expectations now and they should finish the campaign with a top-four spot, but not with the title.

‘Tottenham are doing well, but Manchester City and Liverpool are still the favourites for the title,’ Barnes said as quoted by Mail Sport.

‘They (Tottenham) grinded out a victory against West Brom, a game they could have easily lost, but Tottenham aren’t a team who can continue to do that.

‘They don’t play with enough consistency, score enough goals, so they are over and above their own expectations now sitting in second position, they are title challengers in the sense they will be in the top four, but they won’t finish in the top two.’

Spurs will be hoping that they keep their form and prove Barnes wrong.

we dont score much against defensive playing teams, thats true. But 1:0 counts for 3 points the same way as 5:0.. Or did anything change in the rules over the night?

On the other hand, Leicester just look the best at the moment, although I think that their squad is tighter than what Tottenham has, and fatigue will probably show up in their squad in the second half of the season.
City doesnt look right, they dont score many goals. Chelsea has too many new players who are trying to adjust. they dont even know who their n1 keeper is.
And by the way, I dare to say that liverpool could fall out of the title race in a month. With the major injuries of van dijk, fabinho, alex-arnold, thiago, gomez and tsimikas, their defence is in HUGE trouble. Liverpool will leak stupid goals and lose points. They would be the favorite otherwise, unlucky for them.

so WHY NOT Spurs this year?!

You can have the best attack in the world, but you are not going to win EPL if your defence is fragile. Spurs defence has been definitely fragile for the last 2 years, but this season its getting better and better with every game. Nevermind KaneSonBale, Spurs also have problem to break defensive teams atm big time, and we will probably lose more points against weaker teams

It’s a fair enough opinion; and mostly based on the facts, which are that we lack real consistency; and don’t keep enough clean sheets. I can’t agree that we don’t score enough goals though. He’s in cloud cuckoo land on that one.
