Loan flop might leave Spurs in January

By Bruce Grove -

Jose Mourinho has opened the door for Gedson Fernandes to leave Tottenham in the next available transfer window as the midfielder struggles to prove his worth in North London.

Fernandes was one of the first players to join the club when they made Mourinho their manager last year.

The 21-year-old was signed to provide more cover for the Lilywhites in midfield.

He was given enough time to settle into the team, but after almost a year, it seems that he is just not suited to life at the club.

Spurs have since signed even more players and the likes of Tanguy Ndombele has returned to form, forcing Fernandes to remain on the sidelines.

Even Dele Alli has struggled to play for the club this season and Mourinho has revealed that he will not stand in the way if Benfica decides to recall Fernandes.

He claimed that all he wants is the best for the player and if that involves cutting short his loan spell, then he has no problems.

He told Sport TV as quoted by Sun Sports: “For me it is never a problem, but a solution.

“Having him in the squad, even if he is not called up and not playing, is an extremely comfortable situation.

“I will never be the one to push him or say that I don’t want him here. But I understand the situation of the kid and Benfica.

“If the club wants to end the relationship here, we will be here to collaborate, because we want the good of the player.

“Benfica has the power to decide and will be accepted by us.”

Just looks out of his depth, I could never work out what he is position-ally, but it hasn’t worked out for him here.

Bought too early, a project player as the say in basketball and Mourinho doesn’t have the time to develop him.

I like Jose’s approach to this. It really is what is best for the player. Gedson came to Spurs when the aspiration was to acquire help to get through major injuries and finish out the season. He played where required and when called upon, but as health returned to the squad, opportunities were much more limited.

Come covid, and he is alone in a different country, no fans, odd social situation. Come summer, and signings were then made with aspirations not to finish a rough season, but instead to actually win competitions.

What a tough break for the kid. Fans do not even know his real position, his strengths. He only got to fill in where he was asked due to injury concerns. He never really got to show many of his own abilities.

Thank you, Gedson, for helping Spurs get through a rough season. Thank you for doing what was asked, when you were asked. Thank you for serving a squad you did not know during times that were very unfamiliar.

I hope you go back to Benfica, and I hope you kick ass there. Would have liked to have known a little more about you.
