Levy’s Firing Of Pochettino Wasn’t Personal, It Was Business

By The Boy -

Regular readers will be aware of my disdain for Daniel Levy and for those still confused (or more likely faking confusion) may kindly avail yourselves of this blog’s archive, it’s all there in black and white and purple, prose.

The sacking of Mauricio Pochettino has a good many writers using the b word this morning, but was it really as a brutal as it was painted by some?

“The chairman came in and said ‘can I talk’ and said ‘you’re being sacked, you need to pack your things and you leave tonight’.”

Harry Kane via Fox Sports

I’d submit not, and it says more about the disinformation that lots of fans were all too happy to suck up whilst Pochettino was at the club for his five and half years. Supporters were continuously fed the fantasy that all was rosy in the garden – based upon nothing but club’s public relations and the Argentine’s smile – one long round of backslapping and talking of a bright future.

Simmering beneath the flimflam was a coach that hadn’t been able to churn his squad (he was the only coach in Europe’s top 5 leagues to have been economically isolated in such a manner) and CEO that was obsessing over micro details on a stadium build, opposed to doing his day job properly.

The departure of Pochettino was inevitable in a results based business. The Godfather is the I Ching and one ought to recall the wisdom of Tom Hagen.

Tom Hagen: This is business, not personal! Santino “Sonny” Corleone: They shot my father. It’s business, your ass! Tom: Even shooting your father was business, not personal, Sonny!

The new stadium is very nice and Tottenham Hotspur play in it. That’s the positive bit.

Well, if Jose struggled with 350m of players coming in during his time there, goodnesses knows what he’s gonna do with Levy’s spending levels…

Ok, but will you at least acknowledge that Poch had the 17th net spend and 7th highest wage budget?

Seems to be some people have this mysterious blind spot about this while slating Poch for not winning cups… 😂

I hope Jose does win big stuff for us, I guess you’ll be wetting yourself over a League Cup or Ropey League trophy while we don’t even make the top 4?

No ambition people like you, your complacent drivel is part of the problem.

You honestly think Jose with our spending levels will finish above City, Liverpool, Cheatsk,i Utd? Have you seen the deals they’re doing right now? Get your head out your a**se…

You only watch the team because they gave you a free ticket otherwise you’d never watch them in the flesh, let alone away.

I bet you didn’t go to WHL for years before that. No wonder you don’t care about it being gone, free tickets are for plastic fans. 1k season tickets are for real fans, as are away matches even more so. You don’t know what real support is…

Wasted time getting the team to its highest ever Premier League position and made us a regular Champions League club. You have to win lots of football matches to do that. Don’t be silly now.

Managers don’t negotiate the prices paid for players. That’s between boards, the price is demanded by the selling club at times according to which club comes calling.

You are right Enic have been losers…. But Tappa is right too, Poch has won nothing in ten years… Intelligent people don’t take things out of context. Intelligent people don’t repeat themselves like a stuck record, ‘Enic out’ and ‘jose spent loads’…. Well news for you Mr smart guy, enic are going nowhere, and Jose spent loads at chelsea and Inter, but at manure he did not want over half those players… Woodward calls the shots there.. Its why their transfer activities have been so poor since sir alex and david gill left.

Second in the league and a league cup and the europa league he won after Ed Woodward spent a fortune. More titles in two seasons (with players he didnt want) than spurs have managed in 30 years.

No Ed Woodward spent a fortune while he was there… He was selling players Maureen did not want sold. Blocking his targets like Boatang, Perisic, Maguire etc.. Buying the likes of fred, dalmat, Lindeloff, Lee Grant etc… Jose did not want half those players… This isn’t some secret news, it was plastered all over the media and was talked about on motd and sky… Neville and Roy Keane were furious saying the manure board were ‘naive’ because they gave him a new contract after winning the ropey and finishing 2nd and then crucially not backing him. It comes from the top they were saying…. Jose himself repeatedly talked about it while he was in the job. Also after when he was a sky sports pundit.. Ed woodward himself has admitted he blocked transfers and went and bought his own players. From the horses mouth…. The parallels are clear… “Woodward and jose’ and ‘Levy and poch’ are both extremely similar scenarios in the fact that both chairman know nothing about football, both gave their managers bumper new contracts, both refused to back their managers, both went out spending on litter because they are not football men… Then both sack the managers as soon as results go south..

This isn’t about sympathy, it’s about a brilliant coach who wasn’t backed and sacked after not being backed. If you’ve actually been following Spurs over the last 20 years you’d know that Levy does this to every manager he’s ever had. Undermines them and the sacks them. Jol, Ramos, Arry, AVB. Even Hoddle was messed about in the end…

He’s just a nasty little c**nt, with only one League Cup in the cabinet to show for it all…

It would also be ‘wise’ to consider what a person has to work with, while undertaking a job. Ask Klopp, you want trophies then you need owners that want them too and put their money where their mouths are. No film flam, no academy garbage myths. World class players where you need them, go and win some stuff.

Unless you’re a Levy puppet and he’s working you with his hand up your ar*e…

Name me another manager on the planet earth that achieved what he did with us, on the same disparity in budget compared to his rivals.

You won’t be able to because there is nobody else. You slag Pochettino off as a loser and you just look like a thicko, ignorant of the facts.

If you’re so right about him why does nobody involved with football agree with you? They all think he did an amazing job, but I guess you’re more knowledgeable than these people are you? Got your head up your a*rse, obviously…

Ultimately costing silverware… Yes he made a few bad calls, I never said he was perfect.

However, surely you also agree that a wage budget seven times lower and a net spend 17 times lower than the teams you’re trying to get the better of is a massive handicap for any manager?

It’s in this context that I judge a manager, all of them make some errors of judgement sometimes…

Poch made huge mistakes though ultimately costing us silverware. Also he was saying some really stupid stuff like he would leave if he won the CL. Also he had clearly lost the dressing room. Or half the squad or so. There were plenty not fighting anymore…. Jose didn’t blow 350 mil at united. Loads were Woodwards signings.. Yet still he won the ropey league and finished 2nd in the league without being backed. Ole gunner babyface has been backed with the likes of Maguire (whom jose wanted and was refused) and he has managed fourth and he has won nothing.. Noones perfect but Maureen has been described as a great manager and clever and brilliant by Sir Alex who was the master.. You slating Maureen constantly (for money he didn’t spend) and bigging up Poch as your all time hero is complete madness.. Poch is gone mate, he is the past. He never won anything. Time to get over him.. Now we have one of the greatest managers ever. Maureen has won it all.

There are no parallels with Manure here. Jose spunked a fortune while he was there. Poch had the lowest net spend in the league in the 5 years he was with us. Levy and Woodward are completely different animals.

Steve KillerCushion Williams
Steve KillerCushion Williams

Same as Manures treatment over Maureen…. Give the manager a bumper contract, then don’t back him, then sack him…. Pochs writing was on the wall but why was this?.. Levy… Levy cutting off his nose to spite his face.. Woodward and Levy are a similar breed….. As Sir Alex has always said ‘ you have to trust the manager, he knows what he wants/needs. Otherwise what’s the point of signing him’.

Can’t disagree with anything you said there East Stand.

But I do think Poch will forever regret dropping Lucas for Kane.
Yes we may still not have had enough to win that day, but it was a massive mistake.
Part of me think Mourinho in that final as our manager wins the match however he has to.
But how would he handle the Lucas/Kane situation?

If Levy gives him what he needs, we can achieve.
Mourinho proved that to me by sneaking Europa from nowhere.
It wasn’t pretty, but I don’t think it can be under Levy.
Even though that knock outs run to the Champs Final was beautiful.

It reminded us what Spurs can achieve, all under Poch.

Small scraps from you to try and make Poch look like some kind of waster.

That defeat was this past season, when the recruiting in the summer (after a whole year of nothing) was insufficient to begin a ‘rebuild’ straight off the bat. Sessegnon, LoCelso and Tanguy were/are all young players untried in the Premiership.

The whole thing went to sh*t because Levy did exactly what HH describes above. Am I supposed to take the opinion of a long term Spurs blogger, with a weekly magnifying glass on the club for the duration of ENIC’s time as credible? Or your incoherent clap-trap about the stadium being the reason why we are now set to dominate the world? (Or whatever you go on about)

Anybody who insists on belittling Pochettino for the work he did at Spurs is at odds with almost every top pro, fellow manager and journalist on the planet. Of course he wasn’t perfect, neither is Jose, for example blowing 350m at Utd. Does this make him any less of a manager? Not according to you.

Picking out one game after the whole thing had collapsed and Edwards (who had to leave and grow up as it’s now been proven) is just a pathetic effort of your part. Poch loaned him to Norwich, the manager said he was a lazy little c*nt in training, what you gonna go? Marcus needed to go and sort himself out, learn about life outside North London’s suburbs and his mates.

Top 4 every season, our only ever Champions League final appearance. Klopp lost in the final the season before, the Liverpool board bought him everything he needed and they came back the following season and won it (by a whisker).

Net spend during Poch’s time, 17th in the league, wage bill 7th. I rest my case. Your slagging off of Poch doesn’t stand up to scrutiny from anyone in the know, like 99% of people in football. Give it up, it’s sad.

Up until moving into the new stadium poch knew exactly what he was walking into. I’m sure he was under no illusions. Got paid handsomely for it too. I have no sympathy for him at all. We put him on the footballing managerial map and made him even richer. What did he do for us? “Made us believe again? Bo77ock$! I never stopped believing. arrys inter beating reminded me what Tottenham are all about.

Brutally or not, poch was sacked for having been proved right about what he’d been saying publicly for 18 months. He’d warned it would happen and found himself scapegoated for it by the person who had ignored his warnings and ensured it would happen.

I reiterate my agreement with all those who have suggested that daniel levy himself is the one who should have been dismissed for his gross disregard for winning a first title in 60 years and for committing the club and the fans to paying back £1.2 billion rather than the £400m he had falsely promised. In no other field of endeavour, let alone business, would a man such as levy be venerated.

Business in the sense that Levy either gave Poch £200m to rebuild or sack him and get Jose in for far less! Whether that is good or bad business will be there for us to see in December. Big season ahead, but aren’t they all?
