Latest report reveals Spurs were ready to bid £34.6m to sign centre-back in the summer – will try again in January

Tottenham Hotspur were ready to make a considerable offer to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie last summer, according to German media outlet BILD.

The Ecuadorian has received high praise for his performances during the World Cup in Qatar. He’s been fantastic, and a number of clubs are interested in signing him.

According to BILD, Tottenham are competing with Arsenal and Chelsea for Hincapie’s signature in January. The Ecuadorian joined Leverkusen last year for around £5.5 million from Argentine side CA Talleres, and he has already made a name for himself.

He’s been outstanding in the Bundesliga and so far in the World Cup, and it’s only a matter of days before a top club in Europe signs him.

Tottenham’s interest however is not something new. According to the report, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham are all interested in signing Hincapie. Spurs were reportedly ready to make a £34.6 million bid for him just a few months ago, during the summer transfer market.

The move did not materialise then, but Hincapie appears to be on the move soon, possibly in the January window. His current contract with Bayer Leverkusen expires in 2026 so the German club will be in no hurry to sell him but if they get a tempting offer they could be open to it.

Hincapie is a highly-rated young defender, and the 20-year-old has already made 99 appearances for club and country.

He is a defender who appears to be pretty composed and in control of the game when playing. The Ecuadorian is impressive with the ball in his feet and has the ability to carry the ball higher up the field. His playing style would be more suited for a possession-based team that likes to dominate the ball and find line-breaking passes that advance the ball.
